NWR: healthcare/ medical field

I am a teacher looking to switch careers. I have been considering the following: medical billing/coding, ultrasound diagnostics, or medical assistant.

Anyone here in those fields?? I'm going to meet with someone from Sanford-Brown in the city. Very excited about this new career change. I just have to figure out which would be best for me.

I am in the home health field and I know that many hospitals are looking for billers and coders right now. Hope that helps!!!

I have always been interested in going to school to be an ultrasound tech. Hopefully after the wedding I can get back in the groove!

Good luck!

I did medical billing. I personally didnt like billing- i found it boring. I also was certified in coding. that was alot more interesting but at the time the only job offer I got was billing. I always had wanted to do ultrasound I never got around to going to school for it.

Good luck with whatever field you decide on.
FYI- medical billing/coding jobs are on the rise right now. Alot of drs pay big money for ones that are certified.

Well, I'm not personally in any of those fields, but I think it depends a) how much patient interaction you want, b) how hands on you want to be and c) how much salary matters to you.

I don't know how the salaries compare, but I'd imagine they're different. To me, personally, the ultrasound would be the most rewarding because it's the most hands on... like, literally, consider you're going to be touching all parts of all different kinds of people (ALL PARTS) in order to get images.

Medical assistant is a lot of paperwork and charting and more minimal, but some patient contact, depending on where you work

Coding and Billing, again depending on where you work, might involve almost no patient contact. My friend's mom is a biller at Bellvue and does very well for herself.

But good luck, that's exciting, it's important to be happy with wha tyou're doing!

That's why I was looking into that (medical billing/coding). I don't want something boring though. I don't know!!

Do you know how many years of school I need for u/s tech? I have my Master's now (but in a different field so probably doesn't matter!)

Thank you!

you should also look into MPH programs. i am assuming you already have your bachelors. so you can get a masters in public health in related areas like biostatistic, epidemeology, etc etc...those types of programs might interest you (and my guess is that they might pay more)

Fust a little FYI, I don't know if you've looked into their salaries but if you go from being a teacher to a medical assistant your going to be taking a pretty big pay cut. I don't know how much biller/coders make but I would think that it's around the same as a medical assistant.

I know there are jobs out there for medical billing/coding - that's why I'm considering it. Figured it would be a little boring and it's not hands on. I don't know if I would get too bored. I just figured it's needed, good pay, etc.

Do you girls know if u/s techs are in demand now, or is it hard to find a job?

What about becoming a physician's assistant? It requires a longer period in school, but if you want to do hands on work with patients, you will get the opportunity. The salary is also good and it is a very in demand job.

FYI I heard Sanford Brown is a terrible institute! I was looking into going for Medical Assistanting and when I read the reviews about the school on the website I ran away!! Just be careful and do your research!

Also.....I was so close into getting into Diagnostic Medical Sonography at Western Suffolk Boces. I've heard wonderful things about the program. Only cons its a very intense program. 2 full years, 5 days a week 9am-6pm, and it's very difficult to be accepted. I wanted to do this so bad but because of the schedule I wouldn't be able to work and support myself.

HTH!

im not sure about pay cuts.. generally yes.. but the key is to go into an office that dels with a lot of self-pay patients. (derm/plastic surgery) CAAAA-CHINGGGGGGGGGGGGG! i was 18 working at a derm making BANKKKKKKK (18yrs old 45k+ overtime) as a RECEPTIONIST

Any radiology technician is in demand and makes good money - you are better off going to a community college (Nassau) and getting your associates.

This is something I always wanted to do. It will be more school, but maybe! I have been thinking about it more lately. I have to check into this more! Thanks girls.

Have you ever considered nursing?? I know it's not for everyone but since you already have a bachelors and stuff you could go to stony brook and get into their accelerated RN program and get ur RN degree in 1 yr. of course you would have to take some prereqs first, but you probably have most of them already except for the medical type ones.
