Is anyone here living separately from their FH until marriage? Me and my FH decided to do this and both live at home in order to save more money and put a nice big down payment on a home. But we have two options:
1. We can save a little more until Sept/Oct and start looking for homes then (FH would move in and I would stay at home) so that we have a home to go to after the wedding which is that May. The downside to this is that it would be nice to be able to use wedding money with our down payment.
or
2. My FH's father offered to let us live at their house in the guest bedroom following the wedding so that we can use the wedding money towards a home. The downside to this is obviously not being able to be in our own place until we close on a home. If we did this, ideally we could put a bid in somewhere, if we find a place we like, right before or right after the wedding, and hopefully close and move in within 4 months or so.
Is anyone planning on doing something like this, or can shed some light on our situation?!
Thanks!

NWR: Home buying question..
Fh and I currently both live at home with our parents. We have a house though. His grandparents house which is currently being cleaned out and plan to move in sometime in the next 2 months. We can't wait till we get married.....its too far away lol. How much privacy will you have at his fathers house. Because we have no privacy ever and I couldn't imagine living in either house after we are married. I would go with the first option.
Right now we live at FH's parents house and its okay. We have the basement which is almost a full apartment (everything but a kitchen). We have plenty of privacy like a private entrance and everything.
It allows us to save for the wedding and save for a house. We plan on staying here until about a year or so after the wedding. We need money for a down payment on a house AND a condo/townhouse. FH wants to build me a house so we plan on staying in the condo while we look for a foreclosed place to buy and tear down and then build on.

I would go with option 2! Sounds like a pretty good situation for the time being

NWR: Home buying question..
Currently FH and I live separately. If all goes to plan we will be moving in together around Sept. it wasn't something we planned but a great opportunity seems to have fallen in our lap so we would be stupid not to take it. FH and I decided it was too much to try to buy a house and plan a wedding at the same time. Plus we would have to cut back a lot more on our wedding which I really didn't want to do.
One of the things I am most looking forward to is waking up in our own place. That being said, had this opportunity not come about we probably would not have got a place to rent until a couple months before. If it was financially possible I would go with option one. The last thing I would want is to come home from my wedding and having to wake up along side of my in laws or parents. I want to walk around in my pjs without a bra on and be comfy
Either way your wedding gifts will go toward the house. Whether it be for a down payment or improvements or mortgage payments. A house is a money put, either way you'll be putting it to good use!

I agree with this. FH and I also still live separately for financial reasons. We're getting married the same day you are and we're probably going to start looking for places to rent toward the end of the summer/early fall. We want a place of our own after the wedding, even if that means renting for a year or two. We plan on using the money from the wedding as part of our down payment.
