Ok so last night was the worst. I am sitting in FH's room and he is in the kitchen. All of a sudden, I hear a noise that I have no idea what the h it is. So i get up to go see and then I realize that he is choking! And I mean, really choking. So i freeze up - completely. I hear his mom start running from the living room and I can't get my body to move. I walk so slowly into the kitchen, making sure his mom got there first. His lips are turning blue and I know I should be calling 911 but I can't I am just staring at him. Finally, he coughs up the stupid meatball that he had shoved in his mouth! After I realized he was okay, I got a hard core case of the giggles ( I laugh when I am nervous it is the worst!)
So, after he is teasing me like 'thank goodness my mom was here you were no help' - not that she did the heimlich or anything but she was at least pounding him on the back and taking SOME sor of action. I keep freaking out though - what if I was alone! What if (god forbid) that was one of my kids!! How can I freeze up like that! I am so mad at myself!
But I am so glad that FH is ok- sorry this is so long, it just really upset me that I know that people can't depend on me in crisis!
OMG! I would have frozen up too....So scary...I'm glad he's ok! Tell him to CHEW before he swallows!! Advice I should give my fh...

If you were his only help, believe me, you would have probably not frozen up. Panic and fear will do wonders for you.

OMG, freezing up is a natural reaction. Some people can react, some people just can't. It has nothing to do with dependability, but your nerves. Don't feel bad.
I am glad your FH is okay.

I agree-if you were alone with him or one of your kids-you wouldn't/couldn't freeze up.

Aww! Dont feel bad everyone has those moments and ya know if his mom wasnt home Im sure you would've stepped up and taken care of him. It may have been because you knew his mom was there that you didnt react. Glad he's okay.
I'm of the opinion everyone should be CPR certified, especially parents. My parents watched their best friend die because he had a heart attack and no one knew CPR.
I taught a class of 10 year old children CPR and the Heimlick maneuver and one of them saved her mother's life less than a year after the class!
There really is no good excuse, it takes just a few hours and could save somebody's life! Similarly, if you think you can fake it, and you do it wrong, you could seriously hurt a person or a child.
Many volunteer Fire Departments and ambulance corps hold community CPR classes. Barring that, there are usually community centers to go to, schools, hospitals, or the American Red Cross themselves.
I am SO glad he is ok!! Those meatballs can be dangerous!

OMG THATS TERRIBLE!!!!! I must admit though, when you said 'coughed up the stupid meatball he shoved in his mouth' I started giggling too! I know, it's scarey to be in those situations... But maybe now that it's happened, the next time [god forbid!] anything happens you'll probably be fine and wont go into shock like that...

OMG!! I'm so glad he's OK!! Maybe take a class in CPR/first aide - it would make you feel better and you would know you could do something so maybe you wouldn't freeze up.

Thank you ladies!!!
I agree - if we were alone I probably would have reacted better - but knowing i had his mom there for backup . . .i just froze!!
i was certified for the heimlich and CPR in HS - i have been meaning to update it since there are so many babies in my life right now but this DEFINITELY has motivated me!!!!
thanks for the kind words and support girls :)
in the mean time i think i am going to cut up all of FH's food for him. . .

How scary!! I was an emt for years, I know it can be a scary thing to see someone in that kind of situation - and I have no idea what happened - but here are some tips:
-if the person can talk or cough - he is not choking. if he is truly choking, he will not be able to pass any air at all - and will not be able to make any sound or cough.
- please learn the heimlich -- if someone is truly choking this can save his life.
- if the person passes out from choking, help them to the floor and you can still do the heimlich on the floor - after doing, it check the persons mouth to see if there is food in there (you would learn all this in a CPR class)
- if YOU are choking, and there is no one else around, you can perform the heimlich on yourself by leaning over a chair and imitating the same movements another person would do with their fist.
- have someone else call 911 if you are with other people - YOU should do the heimlich on the person.

i agree.
just remember that in reality, it's REALLY hard to do the heimlich maneuver [properly] and even harder if the person choking is larger than you. so is CPR.
also, your FH should know that if he stood up and leaned HARD on the chair back he can do this to himself!
I think if you were alone you would have taken action! you were not FORCED to be the one to take action and if you were in the situation where no one else was there i am sure you would have. It is a frightening experience... and being his mom was there and in the back of your mind i am sure you knew she'd know what to do seeing's how i am sure it has happened with her kid(s) before!
My sister once did the same thing with my nephew.. he was chocking (about 4 yrs old) and carried him down stairs to my mom to give him care... since she knows what to do and has done so before! but if my mom wasnt there i know my sister would have figured it out and done what she needed to do even if she had to break a rib giving the heimlich...you live and learn, i wouldnt worry about your freezing up!
If you want take a cpr and first aid class so you feel more confident taking action and knowing what to do!
