Ok so last night was the worst. I am sitting in FH's room and he is in the kitchen. All of a sudden, I hear a noise that I have no idea what the h it is. So i get up to go see and then I realize that he is choking! And I mean, really choking. So i freeze up - completely. I hear his mom start running from the living room and I can't get my body to move. I walk so slowly into the kitchen, making sure his mom got there first. His lips are turning blue and I know I should be calling 911 but I can't I am just staring at him. Finally, he coughs up the stupid meatball that he had shoved in his mouth! After I realized he was okay, I got a hard core case of the giggles ( I laugh when I am nervous it is the worst!)
So, after he is teasing me like 'thank goodness my mom was here you were no help' - not that she did the heimlich or anything but she was at least pounding him on the back and taking SOME sor of action. I keep freaking out though - what if I was alone! What if (god forbid) that was one of my kids!! How can I freeze up like that! I am so mad at myself!
But I am so glad that FH is ok- sorry this is so long, it just really upset me that I know that people can't depend on me in crisis!

OMG, freezing up is a natural reaction. Some people can react, some people just can't. It has nothing to do with dependability, but your nerves. Don't feel bad.
I am glad your FH is okay.
i agree.
just remember that in reality, it's REALLY hard to do the heimlich maneuver [properly] and even harder if the person choking is larger than you. so is CPR.
also, your FH should know that if he stood up and leaned HARD on the chair back he can do this to himself!
If the person is really large- you can have them stand up against a wall and do the heimlich from the front (instead of from behind the person, which is ususally done).
CPR is not hard to do, even on really large people. I have done it.

Thank God all went okay...I get nervous too because FH has a habit of 'shoveling it in' . Guess I should learn the Heimlich.

I was very concerned when starting to read your post but forgive me bc i started to laugh a bit at the end!!! You are sooo not alone i freeze up under pressure all the time especially when you don't expect something. Thank God he's ok but im sure your instincts will come a little more naturally in time!!!!
P.S. Im sure depending upon different situations, he'll be thankful YOU are helping him and not his mom!!!!!

i think everyone laughed a little when they heard it was a stupid meatball - seriously thank God he is okay but I think he put the whole thing in his mouth and it was all cold and dry. . . guess he was hungry?
i freeze up a lot with scary stuff but nothing has happened that i was alone for that i can remember so i guess i was never really tested!

wow that is great
those parents are lucky he had you as a teacher! what a blessing!
You may lodge whatever the person is choking on deeper into the throat so it has less of a chance to come out.
Don't worry hun! You are not the only person who freezez or giggles. And i'm glad that FH is ok. He needs to learn how to chew his food!
Maybe it would be wise if the two of you took a CPR class. They teach the heimlick (sp) maneuver and you can even do it to yourself if you are alone and choking. You also learn how to do it on children and babies. The Red Cross always has classes that you can sign up for. I already know this stuff bc I work in the medical field but the minute I find out I'm pregnant i'm taking a refresher course.
