NWR, How can I improve my posture????

I know this is an odd question to ask, but why not?? I really have HORRIBLE posture I've been noticing it a lot lately. Whenever I'm sitting I almost completely hunch over it's terrible, but I guess it's just become a habit now I can't stop!! I'll stop myself and straighten up but 2 seconds later I'm hunched over again. It happens when I stand as well ,just not as much because I'm usually trying to suck in my post baby gut! lol Any advice would be appreciated, I would like to remedy this problem before I develop a hump for God's sake I'm only 33!!!!

I don't know if this would work for you but doing pilates and really strengthening your core really helps. You could also try to train your back by standing in a doorway and keeping your head straightand really pushing back your shoulders. It is odd feeling at first but after a while you kinda get used to it.

this is what i tell my choir for correct singing posture when sitting:
sit at the edge of your chair and imagine a thick phone book behind your back. make sure that both feet are flat on the floor. and when you breathe-- breathe deeply through your nose and out your mouth and make sure that you are breathing through your diaphragm and not with your upper chest. breathing correctly will also help your posture.

and another from theatre classes:
stand flat against a wall and imagine a string is coming out of the top of your head holding you up.

and if you're really serious about correcting your posture, take some alexander technique classes.

I have a bad posture too!!!. I am always leaning forward when Im on the comp/laptop and that is how I beleive I developed a bad posture. Sometimes I sit at work upright without sloutching bec I do that alot but then my ribs and back start to hurt. But I want to continue sitting upright so my spine can get back to normal, straight not curved!

Def by doing back exercises!

Just keep bumping this thread. Every time I see it, I sit up straight again.

I have horrible posture and so does FH (our poor kids)! I am going to try some of these things -- but my shoulders roll forward so I seriously think I need a chiropractor to snap be back.

its so frustrating.

u know, i 've always had horrible posture until someone said that it may be scoliosis, so i took x-rays and found that i do. maybe u actually do have something wrong? (not to scare u or anything)

another exercise you can do are hovers. Lay on the ground on your stomach. Have your arms up in the front of you elbows square with shoulders. When your ready go up on your toes and forearms so your body is parallel to the ground. Make sure your butt stays parallel, it can tend to move up. Hold for as long as you can and repeat a couple of times.

This is another core exercise. It really is about strengthen the core (and hamstrings for when your standing). The other advice about always sitting forward in a chair and standing against the wall will help.

I think there is a lot of us in this boat!

there's a couple of things you can do. the easiest thing would be to get a lumbar roll if you sit a lot during the day (have a desk job, or spend lots of time in front of the computer or driving). by supporting your lower back, that will help train your upper back to slouch less. other things you can do include strengthening your back muscles by doing the rowback machine at the gym, doing one arm rows, lat pulldowns, and the such. but stretching the front of our chest will also help. to stretch out the front of your chest, bring arms up like you're making a goal sign with your arms. rest them on an open doorway and step in with one leg. when you lean forward, you should feel a stretch in front of your chest/pecs. hold for 30 seconds and repeat as much as you need during the day. the combination of stretching and strengthening should help overall. but you could always ask your doctor to check you for scoliosis or if you think something else is contributing to your 'bad' posture. good luck!

stretching the front of the chest really does help. it feels werd at first but the more you do it the better and more normal it starts to feel. Also I found that by just changing the way I sit in front of the computer and how I type can help me sit straighter. Try positioning yourself different when your sitting in front of the computer (knees at 90 degree angle, eyes at same level as top of the computer screen, dont stretch your arms out too far when typing...) every little bit helps.

I have horrible posture...i find that if I sit with both feet under the chair with just my ankles crossed i tend to sit up straighter

i have bad posture too, adn it was pointed out by this medical massage guy i went to a few years ago. he suggested starting to work on it in the car by pushing my head & shoulders back against the seat/headrest. yoga, too, is good for spinal strengthening and letting out the tensions caused by bad posture. bryan kest in my fav bc he makes me sore and red faced as well.

You simply have to spend some time being aware of it at almost all times... It WILL feel uncomfortable at first (If it were more comfortable to you than slouching, you wouln't have bad posture), but eventually it will feel incredibly comfortable and natural for you.

One way to check your posture while standing is to suck in your abs and your butt (think you're pulling on a tight pair of jeans). That puts you in the correct posture.

Don't think 'shoulders back' - think shoulder blades down. Pushing your shoulder blades down naturally rotates your shoulders back into the proper position -- pushing your shoulders straight back or rolling them does not always (or often) put them in the right place.

stick out your chest and pull back your shoulders, like youre trying to make yourself taller.

I don't know if there is anything you can do other then just trying to remind yourself to straighten up.....maybe if you tighten your abs up by doing sit ups that would help..I remember hearing that the stronger your abs are the better your back and posture will be....it could help. ALthough I have to say that I do sit ups almost everyday and i still find myself slouching...
