NWR: Important question

Ok its kinda long. i need to get my wisdom teeth pulled BAD they hurt and i cant sleep at night. i called a doctor to pull the wisdom teeth and they said, Do you have any health problems? and i said yes my heart. I have a heart murmur. they said we cant do the work on u until you start taking meds. and i said for what?? they said i need to be on meds in order for them to pull the teeth. my heart doctor never said i needed meds because it wasnt that bad. ive been to the dentist plenty of times and never took meds before so why cant i get my teeth pulled?? they said i can get an infection in my heart if in not on meds and i should of been on meds when i went to the dentist to get work done but i never have been. so my question is... what should i do?? I have another oral surgeon that i can go to that my family gos to. should i tell them that i have a heart murmur and i never needed meds and never was told to take them? or should i lie and say nothing?? im just so scared that something would happen to me. i havent called my doctor or the heart doctor( cause i dont have the # anymore) its been YEARS since i went to get my heart checked out. it would be so easy if i had health insurance and i would just get checked out again from a heart doctor but god only knows how much that would cost. can someone please give me any help, any info. it would mean so much to me!!! sorry it was so long and my thoughts were all over the place. im just in pain, scared and dont know what to do.

most mummors grow out w. age.....but in some cases they dont. I know my bro has 1 and he was told when he gets dental work done he needs the meds as well. When he got his teeth pulled he got the medication and it all worked out fine!! I wouldnt lie....god forbid anything was to happen! Or call the surgen thats going to do the work and see what he says...he may say you dont need it bc you havent had any issues. Play it safe and be honest!

I have Mitral Valve Polapse which is a leaky valve and when I go to the dentist I need to take about 4 antibiotics a few hours before, I also never knew i needed to take medication and I just found out about 2 years ago that I had a heart problem and the Dr told me I was born like this. See if the dentist can call in a prescription for antibiotics for you, they shouldnt be that expensive (since you dont have health insurance see if you can get the generic brand its cheaper) Help this helped

what you should do is definitey take the antibiotics it may be Amoxicillin. take the 4 tablets 1 hour prior to you dentl visit.. get the wisdom teeth extracted. once that is over, go to your reg. doctor and the Heart Murmur re-evaluated. It's very important that you take the antibiotics prior to any dental treatment due to the possible heart infection (that can kill you) that the dentist was saying to take. You probably were diagnosed at a young age.. and sometimes as we get older the murmur will sometimes close up on it's own. But take what your dentist said very seriously. HTH

i definitely wouldn't lie and say nothing. everything may be fine... but do you really want to chance it? i would maybe talk to the other surgeon and get their opinion. or call the doctor about your heart murmur and tell them what the dentist told you, and see what they have to say.

Tara-Take the meds-there is no reason to put your health in jeopardy.

Go and have those wisdom teeth pulled.

Should I call my normal dentist and ask him to call in the meds? Or the surgeon?

See if the surgeon can

i had a heart murmur until I was a teenager. i was never given medication before any kind of dental procedure and I have had my wisdom teeth out. When I was younger we got a letter from my cardiologist saying that I never needed to be medicated and the dentists kept it on file. My murmur never came back, but I get questioned every time I go to the dentist.

You should get something in writing from your cardiologist or have your dentist and cardiologist speak directly. You poor thing, you need to get those wisdom teeth out!!! I hope your cardiologist can help. It can't hurt to call them. You can have the procedure done, I think they just use a different kind of anesthetic along with the medication. (but im not 100% sure!!)

DO NOT LIE! not only can you can an infection like they said, but anesthesia is dangerous on it's own, and MUCH more dangerous if you have a heart murmur. i'd call your heart doctor and just let them know what's going on and ask what you'd need to do. you may be able to have perscription called in, or they may give you another option (ie, being awake during the procedure as opposed to asleep). also, if your wisdom teeth are impacted, it may be of more concern (longer time under) than if they're not, so ask your dentist about that.

basically, call each of them and let them know your situation ahead of time and see if they can work together, that way you can at least limit the amount of appointments for each.

good luck.

I was just recently diagnosed with mitral valve too, and I have supposedly had it for a long time... I have had root canal, wisdom teeth pulled, and many many cavities filled without meds and without a problem. It is a precautionary measure, and it is better safe than sorry, but I guess I was lucky. From this point on, I will pre-medicate, though.

I had mine taken out and I'm not gonna lie it hurt after they were taken out but then I took the pain killers and I was feeling no pain

My daughter has a heart murmer and must take antibiotics before the dentist. I was told by her cardiologist this is standard procedure. I would not worry, its really just a precaution.
