I was just recently diagnosed with mitral valve too, and I have supposedly had it for a long time... I have had root canal, wisdom teeth pulled, and many many cavities filled without meds and without a problem. It is a precautionary measure, and it is better safe than sorry, but I guess I was lucky. From this point on, I will pre-medicate, though.

I have this exact same situation. I just found out I have an MVP in November and have had my wisdom pulled, root canals, etc ... My dentist told me it's very rare to get sick from cleanings or other dental work, but it would be stupid of them not to take the precaution and god forbid someone gets sick when it's completely preventable. They make it seem worse than it is, so don't worry to much. Just play it safe and take the meds - it's only going to be regular antibiotics. Mine is amox ...

ETA - Mitral valve prolapses are VERY common. I've had mine since I was born and it took over 26 years to diagnose it. They only caught it because I had to have an echocardiogram for a completely non-related reason. I wouldn't worry too much, but it doesn't hurt to see the doctor.

Just wanted to chime in and agree with everyone else. I also have a heart murmur and when I schedule an appointment with the dentist, I remind him of the murmur and he calls in a prescription for antibiotics to my pharmacy. It's just 4 pills, you take them all at once about an hour before he starts in on you, and that's it. Don't be scared - look how many of us LIW'ers have this! Huh, it's weird that for such a small sample of the population, so many of us are deformed.
