NWR! Important traffic/train report for today! BIG FIRE!
OK anyone taking the train home on the Ronkonkoma branch.. its delayed and anyone traveling east on southern state or LIE will be much traffic because of a HUGE fire on LI today!
here's the scoop!
About 25 fire departments have responded to the scene. Most of the fire is located in a 25-30 acre section of the Edgewood Oak Brush Preserve. Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy says one firefighter has been injured. The flames in Deer Park have jumped over Long Island Avenue. LIPA has cut off electricity in the area due to the proximity of power lines to the fire. Residents at 200 homes in eastern Deer Park have been told to shut of their electricity due to brush fires. Suffolk County police are evacuating personnel from some nearby businesses.
Witnesses are reporting massive amounts of smoke blanketing nearby neighborhoods. News 12 Long Island’s Bill Korbel reports the smoke is visible on weather radar. Sagtikos Parkway is currently closed in both directions at Pine Aire Drive. In addition, Pine Aire Drive is closed both ways between Long Island Ave. and Sagtikos Parkway.
LIRR train service east of Farmingdale has been temporarily suspended for the evening rush hour. It's not known when the service will be restored. Buses will be provided for commuters. LIRR advises customers to use alternative train service available on the Montauk and Port Jefferson branches.Also, train service to Farmingdale is limited.
