So, I need a medication for something acute today. My insurance only wants to allow me mail order RX from now on (my boss at my old job was a total cheapskate and right before I left and went on COBRA, he changed everyone's plans to the most ghetto, inconvenient one). Mail order serves me no good when I need something in an emergency or without warning (inhaler, antibiotic, etc etc). It takes 10 business days to arrive!
Now, if I wanted to buy 10 days worth of this prescription out of pocket at the pharmacy...the GENERIC would cost $250. Oh, and both Pharmacy Services and General Customer Service is only open Monday-Friday so I can't plead with anyone. What, people don't get ill on the weekends? Unbelievable. THIS is what is wrong with healthcare. They keep people sick.

Re: NWR: Insurance Company Rant
Usually when you have mail order if it's the first or second time you're filling it they let it go through.
Did the pharmacy try to call to get an override? The pharmacy helpdesk should be open.
DO you have medco?
And did you try to go to a pharmacy with a discount plan? IDK what med you're taking but at RIte Aid many of them are severely discounted.
Sorry you need medication I hope you're feeling okl
ETA: IF this isn't the first or second time you're taking this, the ins co is viewing it as a 'maintenance med'. you should ask your physician for an extra prescription so that you can mail away for it and keep it on hand.
ETA2: OOrrrrr your MD can change it to something similar so that the ins co doesn't see you've taken it before. Then it would be a first time fill, not a maintenance med.
So stupid though, I agree with you. Makes my job mighty irritating.

Wait, they don't have a provision for emergency meds?!?!?!?! Express Scripts does the mail order thing but they also cover local pharmacies, just not at a fabulous price. I'd call so you're 100% sure that you really can't get anything from somewhere local, especially in the case of an emergency.
