NWR - is this a terrible idea?

NWR - is this a terrible idea?

Hey girls! I need some opinions. I graduated in May of 09 with a BA in psychology. Then, I applied to nursing school where I am currently at and have 2 years left to get my BSN. However, I'm starting to seriously doubt and question if this is what I want to do or if it just sounded like a good career. I started looking into careers and other programs. Am I crazy to consider getting my masters in education specifically biology grades 9-12? I know the economy is not so good and teachers are getting laid off but it can't be like this forever! Any other teachers out there? What would be your advice?

i'm not a teacher but my advice is for you to go with your heart! if you don't want to be a nurse, then don't be! whatever job you choose will be your career for the next 30-some-odd years ... you don't want to be miserable all that time!

good luck with whatever you choose!

I think you should follow your heart! I went into the medical field because 'they always need people' and now I'm a medical assistant. Don't get me wrong, I don't HATE my job, but I don't love it either. I wish I would've went for teaching and I plan on going back to school for it right after the wedding.

I agree with everyone else, you should follow your heart, but I can tell you I am an RN with my BSN and I felt the same way you did when I first started Nursing school. I am really glad I finished though, because I really do love it.
There is sooo much you can do in nursing, you do not have to be at the bedside. If that is what is turning you off, don't let that be the only reason.
Nursing is not the most glamorous job, but it does have its benefits. Have you thought about teaching Nursing? I am getting my MSN right now and going for my NP, this way I can always use my masters to teach if the Nurse practitioner thing doesn't work out. There are so many opportunities with this career, you do not have to do med-surg at the bedside nursing forever. I promise!

If you don't want to do nursing I'd take some time off, work full time somewhere and figure out what you want to do.

The economy does stink but if you go through the NYC ed. fellowship program they pay for your grad schooling while you teach. The only catch is you have to work for the city several years after you graduate. It's an option though!

ITA-I was always taught to do what you love...even if it doesn't make you a millionaire, because money can't buy happiness. I understand that the economy isn't doing well, but it will take time for you to get your degree anyway....so by then, things may pick up. Good Luck

Do what makes you happy and the economy is bad now but slowly getting better. Maybe in a few years when you graduate things will be way better! It's important to like your job. Good Luck

Thanks everyone. Honestly, I have had such a hard time figuring out 'what I want to do when I grow up'. I am so stressed out about this. My FH wants to kill me he feels that I constantly change my mind which equals to him wasting time and money. I'm just so stressed out and upset about my entire situation.

Did you get a masters in psychology? Why are you unhappy about it?

Its hard getting a teaching job these days...nursing is much easier. However, you dont want to end up doing something that doesnt make you happy.

I think that you should do it.. Even though the market for teachers is bad right now, I am always hearing about schools that need science and math teachers. I feel like you have a better shot than someone who is an English or Gym teacher for example. I considered becoming an English teacher but I never hear about a demand for those!

yup. I got my MA in Forensic Psych. Up until 2-3 years ago I could still work in the state hospitals without a license. BUT lovely NYS changed the laws and made a new licensure degree (Mental Health Counseling) in place and everyone wants that licensure that a MA psych can't get. I'm not going for my doctorate so the Ma was a waste of time. I'm in the process of going for my 2nd MA in the MHC degree.

OH.. if you do like psych and like kids go get your school psychology degree. It's one of two (the other is I/O) MA psych degrees you can get licensed with.
