NWR: Job Interview...advice please!

I'm going on an interview tomorrow morning and I'm really nervous, I haven't been on an interview in 4 years since I've been at my current job. I really want this job, it's so much better than my current job in so many aspects.

Can anyone give me some advice, tips, etc? PLEASE

Go online and practice some interview questions.
Try to stay relaxed.
Get a list of questions together that you want to ask them.

Be able to name your strengths and weaknesses (which your turn into a possitive) - I hate that they still ask those stupid questions...

But mostly - act confident!

Gook luck!

What kind of questions would I have for them?

Tatum...how could I turn a weakness into a positive? I wouldn't want to mention a weakness?!?!

Hey Melissa!

Here's what I posted to another LIWer a few weeks ago:

Practice, practice, practice! There are basic interview questions that most companies will ask. Memorize your answers for these questions, like: What are your strengths? Weaknesses? Give an example of a time when you were in a position of leadership and faced a difficult task... what was the result?

Here is a link to common interview questions:
Potential Questions

At least if you have some answers prepared, you'll feel more confident.... just be sure not to memorize the answers down to the adjectives you'll use lol...then you'll be too busy trying to get it 'perfect'.

Best of Luck

And Melissa, you seem to be a really confident gal... I'm sure you'll do fine once you're there! Don't be nervous

Edited to fix questions link.

Questions to be prepared for:
Why are you leaving your old job?
Why do you want this job?
What can you contribute to your role or this company?
What do you expect to take away from this role or this company?
Be prepared to discuss some past experiences that may relate to the role you're applying for.
Why should they hire you over the other candidates?
What qualities do you like in a manager? Discuss a past experience.
What qualities do you dislike in a manager? Discuss a past experience.
Discuss a past experience when worked with a team to achieve results.
Where do you see yourself in 2,5,10 years??

Questions to ask:
What is the potential for this role?/ What is the normal path for someone in this role?
What is potential for movement within the company (i.e. other departments)?
What skills will I acquire from this role?
What is the typical turnover for people in the department? (Have most of these people been here for 1 year, 20 years?)
Depending on the job - how is XXX done here? (i.e. I'm an auditor so I would ask how audits are managed at my firm vs another)
How often do we work with other groups within the department? Within the firm?

If I think of anymore I will post them.

Re: NWR: Job Interview...advice please!

Great advice from everyone.

I start a new job on Monday and one question that was asked to me was .....what did I know about the company. You should do some research on the company to be prepared for that question. Know how long they have been in business, what the company does, if there were any recent articles in the paper..etc.

You should also make sure you bring a reference list with you with 3 references.

Good luck and let us know how you make out!!

When I do interviews, there are two things that stand out during good interviews. First, do your research about the company, so when they ask about the position, you seem like you are well informed and interested. Also, someone once asked me what I like about my job and the company. I thought that was a great question. She got the job!

Practice explaining what you currently do and then try to come up with an answer to explain how what you do will help you in this new job.

Don't use your hands too much, they start watching your hands and get distracted from what you are saying.

Manicure manicure manicure!!! : )

Definitely google some general questions.

Bring a question or two about the position, company, etc.

the biggest piece of advice I can give you is, be prepared. And be prepared to give at least one weakness, but put a positive spin on it.

For ex: Say your weakness is that you sometimes have a hard time admitting that you have too much on your plate, but you have been working on that by giving up some mundane tasks or easier tasks.

Good Luck and report back tomorrow.

Re: NWR: Job Interview...advice please!

ok...well every interview i have gone in to i was myself...dressed really professional..knew the info on my resume so that if they asked i could elaborate on it...

i never really asked questions about the company UNLESS there was something that was unclear. I dont ask questions just to ask them...

so there may be one or two things ill ask...and when i went on the interview (it was more a meeting I had the job) they took me on a tour of the place and i asked questions

easy: BE YOURSELF! by all means...bc if ur not..they will see the way u are down the line and they may not like u...let them not like u from the start is how I feel.

BE CONFIDENT you applied bc u felt you can do it...so behave that way.

MAKE THEM FEEL YOU WILL BE AN ASSET to the company. Explain why (when they ask) you are great for the position.

good luck!
