NWR-Jury Duty Information!!!

So I’ve never been on jury duty before and I think I’m being called tomorrow…any recommendations on what I should bring? Would it make any sense at all to bring my laptop—I don’t have a clue if they’re gonna have wifi there or anything. But I would love to spend the day on LIWeddings and not worry about geting fired for once!

Btw—I’m reporting to the Nassau County courthouse that’s around Old Country Road.

UPDATE: I'm sitting in the jury duty waiting room, so yes they have wifi and let you bring your laptops in

I don't know about the wifi thing but make sure to bring a book....it can get sooooooooo boring.

I haven't done it in years, I was called in 98. I waited for a while...went in for one case and was excused. Then waited some more. They sent me home a little after lunchtime and that was it.

I know back then I saw people with laptops but scary enough I don't think we had wifi 10 years ago.

Now that I said this, I probably cursed myself and i'll get called now.

bring your laptop, even if they don't have WiFi you can play solitaire or something - and DEFINTELY bring a book (two if you're a fast reader)...

Does anyone know if it's true that you can't bring a cell phone with a camera inside? I was looking around some other posts and saw that.

It depends - is the federal court or state court?

You cannot bring any kind of phone into federal court - and if you try to you will have to check it at the front desk like a coat check. At state court, they won't stop you from bringing it in, but you need to make sure it's off.

Um, I’m pretty sure it’s state court, but on the summons there was something saying I couldn’t bring any phones or cell phones with cameras in…the summons is at home so I’ll check it later.

There should be a website for Nassau county courts, I'd sugest searching for it and seeing if it says you can bring laptops and maybe whether they have wifi.

I would think they do as you mentioned.

I worked all of last summer at the NY State Supreme Court in Nassau (and I've also had to go to Suffolk Supreme a lot) and despite this 'rule' I always went in with my cell phone and it was not a problem so long as it is off. BUT, I now go to federal court a lot and I know you definitely cannot bring any sort of phone in there. I was just there last week and they made me check it at the door. I wouldn't worry about bringing it in if it is state court - and if for some reason they said something to you, you could always run it out to your car. But, if you do bring it in, obviously do NOT take it out and start taking pictures.

I just did jury duty a few months ago on Old Country Road--it was state jury duty.

People were allowed to bring their laptops and there is a separate room that you can work in with tv's and computer stations. You can go in there and use your laptop as much as you want.
