NWR jury duty question

Okay so someone I know got a notice today in the mail that she's been summoned for suffolk county grand jury.

Nothing in there about the phone-in system to find out if she has to report. It just says that grand jury service is M-F 9-5 for FOUR WEEKS OR MORE.

Is this for real? Is there any way to get out of it? And if not, what is the likelihood that she'll actually be used and if she's used... the chances that it'll be more than just a day.

Grand jury is MUCH different than regular jury duty. I work with a girl that had to serve for 4 weeks.

So yeah, its a good liklihood she will have to serve 4 weeks. Its not like a regular trial. You sit and see if there is enough evidence to bering charges. So you see like a ton of cases. Thats why its 4 weeks.

I dont know about getting out of it.

Re: NWR jury duty question

I got called for Suffolk Grand Jury Duty and I work in the Nassau Courts. Yes 4 weeks or more is absolute for real. it could be every day for 4 weeks or it could be a day or two a week for months (special grand jury).

She has to show up on the first day. If its the same as it was 4 years ago, they will ask for 'volunteers'. If they get the 100 and something people they need (23 each panel for at least 4 maybe 5 panels) they will let everyone else defer for 3-6 months. Lots of people will volunteer because if you are picked, you are excused for 6 years. and almost everyone is 'picked' for GJ duty. its a very different jury selection. If they don't get enough they will start picking from the drum. but thats very unlikely.

If your friend does not volunteer and they get enough in those people, what your friend should do is ask them to give her trial/petit jury duty next time when she goes up to the desk and asks for the deferment. its not a guarantee but its likely. they will write it on her summons and call her. she can even tell them when to call her!

HTH!
