NWR: kennel recommendation?

NWR: kennel recommendation?

FH and I are going to FL in April to visit his parents and need to board our dog. The place we usually bring her doesn't allow us to pick up after 6:30, and our flight gets in at 6:10 So, I'm looking for a new place. Has to have suites (no crate-only boarding) and cannot be a place where the dogs are all together, as my dog doesn't play well with others. I've looked into K9 Clubhouse in Lindenhurst - which would work well since we are flying out of Islip.

Anyone have any experiences with that place? Or others that are either near Huntington, Islip or in between?

TIA!

What about Pet Smart in Huntington?
They have a hotel attached.

I looked there a while ago, and they said they don't like 'bully breeds' - I have a pit I think they were a little more than I wanted to spend, too, but I will check into them again - thanks for the reminder!

We use the Malibu Pet Motel in Freeport. Never had a problem with them.

Thanks - I have heard of them - if we wind up flying out of LaGuardia (flights not booked yet) I will check them out.

Good luck!
I think its more traumatizing for me than them I hate leaving my dogs anywhere. One of my dogs 'doesnt play well with others' but they said he was fine.

Yeah, it is definitely tramatizing for me I hate doing it. And we're going for three nights, which will cost $75 or so .. .not terrible esp. when FILs are paying for our flights because they want us to come down there, and we are staying with them... but $75 is a lot when I am trying to pay off my honeymoon and car loan and save ... so, my issue is making sure I can pick her up on Mon night because 1) I don't want her to stay there if she doesn't have to, and 2) I don't want to spend another $25 if I don't have to.

We took her to a kennel in MA once (had a wedding there and it was easier for her to ride in the car with us and stay near us than drop her off before we left - again, the kennel's hours stink) and she had NO VOICE when we picked her up ... I am guessing she barked the whole time. Makes me upset ... but what are you gonna do? I hope to find someone who can come to my house for the honeymoon.

Wish I could ... all the family members I would leave her with have pets and she doesn't get along with other animals ... it'll work out.

Try the Willow Pet Motel in Deer Park. It's right on Deer Park Ave a couple of miles South of the LIE. We've boarded our dog there many times in the past and they are GREAT!

Just noticed the other post...but I second Willow =)

We take our two pit bulls to Willow Pet Hotel. They have long indoor/otdoor runs and then can have individual playtime with a member of the kennel staff out in the yard. They are really great with mine, who usually don't like everyone but seem to love the staff there.

Best Friends (the place where amanda suggested) is where we send sophie too. their drop off/pu times are 8-10 & 5-7 they will however may accomodate a different p/u time if you ask, they are so incredibly friendly there it's not even funny.

we used k9 clubhouse in lindenhurst the first time we went away for a week after getting sophie. it's a good place but the guy was kinda nasty when we called to tell him we were on our way to pick her up and he said and i quote 'Good b/c she won't stop barking' that irriated me b/c our dog isn't a barker AT ALL! so when we got there she had gone to the bathroom all over the suite. HMMM A$$HOLE maybe that's why she was barking - she had to go out! Turned me off right away!

Thanks kristi. I knew someone went to k9. I don't like that story at all. Problem with best friends - I need a 2:30 drop off and 8pmish pick up ... and both those times are different than their advertised times, and I hate making a fuss. But I will call and see what they say, maybe go visit them next week (i know i need to make an appt.)

thanks ... I looked into them and their d/o, p/u times stink too. why do all kennels have such weird hours for this??? but they are on the way to the airport, i will call them too. i have a pit who does not get along with other dogs - do you know if she will be isolated from other dogs?? this is important. i do like the indoor/outdoor pens, that is what she is used to. i think we paid for 1 playtime a day? not a lot but they add up ... maybe I will do 2 a day this time.

I know what you mean about pickup/drop times not being helpful. Definitely give them a ring and see if they can help out.

I don't think the dogs are isolated unless you need them to be. I know the kennel manager once mentioned that the kennel is divided into sections: active/young dogs, scared/timid/quiet dogs, and the older dogs. They are pretty knowledgeable, so I think if you explain how your dog is, they can tell you how they would deal. I know they also do kennel tours so you can check it out yourself.

We usually get one play time a day. We thought that was enough because a lot of time they run up and down their runs chasing the other dogs. Even with one play time, they come home exhausted.

amanda, i just watched this and got teary eyed. it's so awesome that she learned all that and now does it. wish i could afford to get dutchess trained properly ... but i can't. she listens but not as much as i'd like, and she can't be off leash or near other dogs.

I will definitely call them on monday.
