NWR: major TMJ pain

NWR: major TMJ pain

I have been diagnosed with TMJ from a specialist. The pain has become so unbearable. I get major headaches, the pain in my jaw is severe. I need to go to a different specialist to get a mouthguard to wear at night.

Does anyone else have TMJ, that has the nightguard and/or can recommend a specialist to go to?

Thanks so much!

ugh I know TMJ can be a nightmare. Sorry I don't know anyone.

can you ask your dentist or oral surgeon?

They recommended someone, but they don't accept my insurance, and they were super expensive.

i went to a specialist back in highschool and got a mouth guard. however, i lost it in college (i think when i moved out my senior year $900 lost). I got a new one made up by my regular dentist. i think the key thing is to have one made from an impression/mold of your mouth so it fits you... and isnt a generic from CVS.

in the meanwhile, don't eat hard veggies (ie carrots) or large sandwiches (hero), dont chew on pens/pencils, or rest your head in your hand while sitting at a computer or desk... that all puts strain on the jaw. NO GUM. also, when you yawn, put the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth = this helps prevents you opening your jaw to its max. you can also say 'emma' outloud. its random i know but it relaxes the jaw.

when i got my second one, insurance covered a little bit... i think i paid $400 or so. if you are in pain, its worth it. just dont loose it like moi.

Thanks for the tips!!! I will keep thme in mind. I brought something from CVS, what a waste of money. I just have to s*ck it up and go to a dr. Like you said, the money is well spent if it helps you.

i have tmj and went to dr sharfenberger in massapequa... http://www.plainvieworal.com . i was fully covered for a mouthguard and swear my tmj is practically healed. i didnt use the mouthguard for very long either. the trick is to know your body to see what triggers it. i became aware that i clench when im stressed , especially in my sleep-- i wanst much of a grinder.

I'm a teeth grinder I went to a Dr. a few years ago about my TMJ and he told me it wasn't worth it for me to get a mouthguard because having something in my mouth would trigger me to grind more. I clench all the time -- especially in traffic. (Funny thing is, I always clench my butt too... I guess I'm just a natural clencher.)

I feel your pain! Let me know how it works out...maybe I'll see another specialist and get something to heal this unbearable pain!!

my guy is barry rozenberg.. he has an office in valley stream and one in manhattan. he is very good. I went to him a few years back because of severe pain, and now I am good. I just wear the night guard every night.
