NWR: Need advice on a job issue - UPDATED

I started working with a company the first week of the month, but after 3 days I realized the job was not for me, and the commute into the city was a PITA. Technically, I would have been paid on the 15th. Well I had quit on the 9th, but I worked for 3 days. I know it was screwed up of me to do, but at least I gave them notice!! I have seen people just walk out or not come back without explanation!!

So now here I am figuring I should at least be getting a paycheck for those 3 days that I worked. But here we are on the 21st, and nothing. No paycheck. I am thinking maybe this is their way of getting back at me and they figured I could claim unemployment. If it was mailed out, it should have been on the latest, Friday, and it doesn't take that long even with the holidays!

FH thinks I should just write it off as a loss. But it's about $400 I earned for those 3 days. Should I call? Wait a few more days? I know they will be closed on Friday and possibly all of next week, so tomorrow is my only option to contact them. Or should I write it off like FH says? For some reason I am pretty sure it is against the law to withhold pay or not pay someone for time worked!

I would call you are entitiled to those 3 days of pay.

I woud call and just say something like 'I wanted to make sur eyou had my correct contact info to send my paycheck for the days I worked.'

I guess it depends on what kind of work it is but I would let it go.

If it is an hourly type job, def fight for it. If it's an office type job that requires some time getting acquainted with processes and you didn't do any real work for them, just forget about it.

So I just called......and they said they didn't send me one because I didn't ask for one!!! W T F???

He said because I cut out and left them and didn't specify whether or not to be paid, so they didn't send me a check!! Umm, do I have to tell them whether or not to pay me??!! Should that have even been a question?? I could understand if I got up and left without warning, but at least I called and left a message explaining why I could no longer work there!!!

Well, I told them would they send one now and he said he will put it on the next payroll which is next week. But I still have to wonder what drugs they were smoking to think I wouldn't want to get paid!!

Thanks all for the advice, ladies. I almost didn't want to call, but I thought screw it, I didn't work there for free.

Wait a bit and if they don't send a check, one of your lawyer friends on LIW (ssdbk) will volunteer to write a letter for you, with the ooh so scary lawyer letterhead.

I think that right there is yet another telling sign of why you didn't need to stay at that job. At least you'll get what you earned, even if it's late.

Tell your FI to get over it. Nobody should work for free.

You have every right to the paycheck. Makes me wonder if they have been through this before and another person left abruptly and didn't ask for the check...hmmm.

I think they must have had people leave abruptly because the guy asked me about a dozen times 'Are you sure you're not still entertaining offers or going on other interviews'. I kept telling him yes.
