NWR: Need help teachers

I am looking for a job on Long Island as a teacher and I dont know when to send out resumes. HELP!!!

Re: NWR: Need help teachers

I'm looking for a new job as well. I'd reccommend sending them out about Feb./ March. Most teachers need to notify in Jan. for retirements.

Thanks....in the past i sent them out in January but I dont know if that does any good or if they get thrown in a pile.

Re: NWR: Need help teachers

Get the NY Times every Sunday. In the weekly reveiw section, they print the upcoming educational openings. When I lived on LI, I sent my resume to every district and just got these silly postcards. I would wait until you see actual openings.

Yeah i do that too......I HATE those postcards LOL

Re: NWR: Need help teachers

I would also recommend hand delivering them to the districts you are really interested in. This way they see a face and know how interesting you are (plus it saves on postage ).

Re: NWR: Need help teachers

You might as well wait until you see the ads in the Times or hear of a definite opening from someone. Also checks the olasjobs board for Nassau County positons and districts websites. SO many districts just use online apps now that if you send resumes you are just going to get back a postcard saying you need to do the online app - I've had that happen a few times.

Re: NWR: Need help teachers

dowling posts an educationjob opening list every week on their website. It has all of the jobs that were listed in Sundays paper. It is a pdf here is the link: http://www.dowling.edu/mydowling/stu.php
It is under the announcements heading. they usually update it every week. Sometimes it takes them longer than other times. I would also check every district's web sites... that helped get me a lot of interviews!

good luck!

honestly, the best time is towards the end of the school year, and then again in august. You never know what's going to pop up. I got my job for this year July 22nd. Good luck :)

Re: NWR: Need help teachers

I would start sending out now. AND I hope you don't have your masters yet. I worked as a sub for 2 1/2 years and couldn't get a job, everyone told me it was because I had my masters!!! So that is why I am now living in VA. I have been teaching for 2 yrs down here now, and they are in desperate need for teachers!!
I do wish you the best of luck in your search, if I could have got a job on LI I would have loved to stay, but now I am more than happy in VA!

Re: NWR: Need help teachers

I dont know how true that is about all districts... Both FI and I had our masters before we started our first teaching jobs! We started sending out resumes this time last year to posted jobs, then around March I sent out resumes to all districts... doing the latter did get me a few interviews as well as a lot of postcards. I would try everything and don't give up! FI didnt get his job offer unti the end of the summer too! Keep looking and sending out resumes until you hear the words 'You'r hired!'

Re: NWR: Need help teachers

I started around now by doing a mass mailing. Then got the NY times and saw what was posted and sent more that way. Don;t be discouraged. I got my job in July. I wouldn't wait though. You want your name to be included in the initial pool. They sometimes go back to that pool if something opens up all of a sudden. That's what my district did when I was on the hiring committee.
