NY doesn't pay anywhere near what it should to match the real estate prices and rent. NY salaries would have to be 60% higher… there was CNN article about this a few weeks ago. VERY depressing!!!!!!!!!!!!

It does pay well, but everything else is very expensive also like food, clothes (in a chain store, I pay up to $6 more in Manhattan and Queens than on LI).

You also don't need a car so there goes the car insurance and car payment.

It really all balances out!

when i lived there I didn't get paid enough to live-

plus I didn't even have a real room- I have part of the living room with a fake wall that cost $1000

I hear ya, I lived in a shoebox for $1000 on the UES. My DH still cannot believe I had so much stuff in that tiny apt.

You are right....I moved to Los Angeles with FI this year and although we have an awesome apartment that is double the size of our NYC one, we each had to get cars to go to work and with the price of gas and insurance, it ends up being more.

And I was lucky because I only had to take a $2,000 pay cut when I found a job out here. Some places I interviewed wanted to cut my NY salary by $15K. I was like Are you for real?
And they were.

Not for what I do - I would make the exact same money in Chicago, not pay city taxes, and it would go so much farther - from rent to groceries to eating out - everything. I've seen those cost of living comparisons and they are grossly inaccurate.
