I want to open up a joint account with FH but my mom is giving me this big lecture on why we should have seperate accounts just in case something were to happen between us. But geez, why would I be thinking about something happening and him running away with the money when I trust him and he trust me. Maybe in her generation of married life this sort of thing happened and I understand that many couples go through with it now....Im just curious to know your thoughts on this...

FH and I each have seperate accounts and we also share a joint account. Our joint account is more for savings and the wedding, vacations, things like that. We both put a specific percentage of our paycheck in our joint account every time we get paid, and then we keep the rest in our seperate accounts. I think its nice to have a little bit of both worlds because we have that structure for savings by having the joint account, yet when we want to spend some money on personal stuff for ourselves, or a gift for each other, we can do that without having to worry about it.
I say do what you feel comfortable doing. There is no right or wrong answer with something like this ya know? HTH.

DH and I have been together for 10 years...we've had a joint account for the past 6. I do all the finances....I WISH we both made enough to have seperate accounts too but, we dont I agree, do whatever you feel comfortable doing. If you are able to have both joint and seperate I would def say you should both contribute a % or exact dollar anount per paycheck/month to the joint. GL !

Why cant you have seperate accounts? It takes very little to open one up..

we will each keep our own checkings and savings
and we're opening up a joint checking and ing savings for home and future family related purposes....
The seperate accounts we'll keep bc i dont want him ever complaning about te amount of shoes i buy or me complain to him how much he spends on his toys...
I want us to be united (joint accts) yet keep our own identities (sep accounts)
so thats what we're doing

We have a had a joint account for 2 years, both our paychecks go into it. Basically most of it is for bills, gas, and groceries. We also have seperate accounts for any extra money we get and spend it on what we want to. I also work at a bank, so he trusts that I know what I am doing!

We had a joint checking account that we both put money in to pay the bills & to buy groceries. I take care of all of the household finances.
We also have a joint savings that we are currently using for the wedding. We will use this savings for vacations & rainy days after the wedding. Asid fromthis we both have sepaprate checking accounts & savings accounts for the things that we each want to buy. I also think a little bit of both is good.

i also think that maintaining separate accts while having a joint acct is a smart idea. use the joint for all joint expenses.

We have a joint account. We didn't like the idea of my money and your money it's our money. Everything we own we own together. I guess that means he owns my shoes too, but he never wears them

We just opened up new accounts. One for me, a joint account, one for him, and a business account for his freelance business. It was never an issue, we both thought this was the best way to go. It's not that we're not combining our finances, we already have, but...I've always had my own account, and so has he. It's not that we don't trust each other, or we think we're going to break up. It's just nice to have a little autonomy.
