NWR: Ossobuco?

NWR: Ossobuco?

FH and I are going out to a fancy dinner tonight and since I'm a picky eater, indecisive, and an active member of the IBS/IBD group ( ) I like to check out the menu beforehand even if I've eaten there before.

I saw Ossobuco w/ Risotto Milanese listed as an entree. I looove risotto and googled Ossobuco and it's braised veal shanks? I'm not really sure what that means or what it tastes like

Has anyone ever eaten this before? I'm trying to branch out a little bit but I don't want to go TOO far...

yup its braised meat, and it has to be done right in order to be good, it is very rare to see that on a menu, You must be going to a very nice place....what place is it?

Its not Osteria Da Nino is it?

It's not in NY but it is a very fancy place. FH and I have gone there to celebrate our 2, 3, 4 and 5 year anniversaries, my full scholarship to law school, and the night we got engaged. (wow, didn't realize we've been there so many times!) my sis/MOH got us a gift cert to the restaurant as an engagement gift, so we're going tonight to celebrate 6 months of being engaged (which is actually tomorrow, but they arent open Sundays)

Very good. It will be like a very tender steak--I am going from old memories--and it shouldn't bother your IBS.

Re: NWR: Ossobuco?

these are the entrees...

Linguine with Lobster and Shrimp
Grilled Filet of Halibut
Roasted Salmon
Grilled Scampi and Lobster Tail, Mustard Sauce
Filet Mignon of Swordfish
Lobster Albanello
Sautéed Dover Sole, Lemon Sauce
Veal Rib Chop with Eggplant
A Trio of Veals
Veal Cutlet alla Milanese
Ossobuco, Risotto Milanese
Stuffed Quail/Beef Tenderloin, Wild Rice
Boneless Chicken Breast, Fresh Fruit Sauce
Tenderloin of Beef, Foie Gras, Port Wine Demi Glaze
Veal Loin Chop Truffle Sauce
Prime Sirloin Steak, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Lemon,
Garlic and Basil
Prime Sirloin Steak Diavola
Filet Mignon, Chianti Sauce
Prime Rack of Lamb, per service

i'm deciding between the ossobuco, the dover sole, and the filet mignon or sirloin...

hmmm... maybe i should talk FH into getting the ossobuco

Ossobucco is good but like Nicole said it has to be a place that KNOWS how to make it right. Personally i stay away from red meat as much as i can bc i dont digest it well and upsets my stomach. But depends on how your stomach handles it.

I can eat red meat without a problem. (burgers, taco salad, steak, etc). This is a 5 star restaurant so I'd assume they know how to make it right, but I'll probably stick with something more 'safe'

thank you

Re: NWR: Ossobuco?

haha i keep changing my mind between the ossobuco, the filet mignon and the dover sole... it's weird though, the dover sole is actually more expensive than the FM

If I prefer beef to veal do you think I'd like the ossobuco?

yes! i'm not a big veal person, but i've had ossobucco a few times and i really liked it! i hope we don't steer you the wrong way!

I've had osso buco and really loved it. It was a while ago though. I think you can also eat the bone marrow out of the bone or something like that. Sounds crazy but it was very tasty.

Re: NWR: Ossobuco?

So i asked the waiter to tell me more about the ossobuco and it sounded like the risotto (which was what made me consider it) was just a small side, and i don't think it's really my kind of dish....

so i chickened out and got the sauteed dover sole which was unbelievable!! i'm happy with my choice but i feel a little guilty for chickening out...

wish they'd have ossobuco at my cocktail hour so i could try a bit without having to 'waste' an expensive dinner on something i might not like...

Re: NWR: Ossobuco?

Glad you had a good time and enjoyed your choice. I am not a veal eater but enjoy ossobucco -- however I am always sceptical about getting it in restaurants -- it truly has to be prepared the proper way if not it would be a big waste!

ETA: It doesn't bother my IBS if made properly -- if its not it is more the sauce or juice that bothers me then the actual meat.
