NWR: polycystic ovarian syndrome

Do any of you girls have any firsthand experience with this syndrome or know anyone who has?

three of my four BMs have it (and the fourth thinks she might) ... two of them just had their babies - happy and healthy baby boys

I actually spoke to my doctor about it but i was confused by her ... she made it sound like PCOS means that you never ovulate ... but my friends kind of told me otherwise ... can someone explain exactly what it means to have PCOS? (i should prob know but i feel dumb asking my friends sometimes)

some people never ovulate, some do at unexpected times, some ovulate regularly but have other issues. Its really different for everyone.

Re: NWR: polycystic ovarian syndrome

I was diagnosed at 19 by the University health clinic. When I finished college I had a full exame (including ultrasound) and my OB GYN told me it was a mild case, that he wouldn't have even picked it up had I not told him.

As mild as my case it though I still have many of the symptoms, noteably irregular periods (can go 5-6 months without one if not regulated by the pill) and difficulty losing weight. (That's the WORST!)

I didn't realize how many people actually have this. I was diagnosed with it a few years ago and the Dr. made it seem like no big deal. He just said that I needed to continue taking the pill if I wanted to eventually have children. If I don't take it I don't get my period regularly. I definitely notice that it is harder losing weight too.

Re: NWR: polycystic ovarian syndrome

A lot of people have it and don't even know, it affects people differently really.

For me, I was diagnosed with it after not having my period for almost 6 months, my hair growth started going crazy, I gained like 20-30 pounds within 1-2 months, and had bad acne. For me, I had high levels of testosterone, so that needed to be controlled. I also had so many cysts and still do...it literally looks like a string of pearls when you look at it. I was immediately put on medicine that some take for diabetes to help control my glucose. After about a year or two, that started loosing its affect (I was taking 2000mg at one point). I was then put on birth control and it's been great since then. My weight's been maintaining, acne's under control, and the gyno thinks I should be okay when it comes to having kids, just need to be extra careful. I've heard people have more of a tendency to have miscarriages w/ PCOS, but if you start to control it and regulate it, then that helps alleviate a lot of possible risks in the future. Again, it really is different with everyone. I used to be part of a PCOS message board which was really helpful in the beginning to know how to help control it.

I have it. I will go from 60-75 days without my period and then get it so heavy I cant even get out of bed. The doctor suggested I have it... put me on BC but the bc made me get so fat so I took myself off of it.

Is there anything other than BC that we can take?

Wow. Its crazy to see how many people have it. Has anyone had major lower back pain going from their back down their leg? I had an MRI whic said no problem with back or anything. The MRI just showed bilateral cysts which was possible evidence of pcos.

I was originally on one BC (I think it was Yaz) which made me gain weight, terrible cramps, etc. I've since switched to Orthotricyclen Lo and that's really helped w/ everything. Talk to your gyno to get you on different type of BC. It took me 2 other tries before I found the right one.

You can also visit a endocrinologist who will be able to check your blood and offer different types of medicines.

this is pretty much me exactly. for years no one could figure out why my period was so irregular (used to get it like once in the winter and once in the summer) until i found a great dr. that diagnosed me. my dr. wasn't terribly concerned because I have a mild case and just said that i would need a little bit of help when it comes time for kids. as simple as taking a pill (i think) to help me ovulate. i hope.

is everything ok? you've got a lot of people in the same boat as you so feel free to reach out.

Re: NWR: polycystic ovarian syndrome

Has anyone had back pain/leg pain with this? I am waiting for my appointment on Tuesday, but am worried maybe a larger cyst is causing this pain.

Re: NWR: polycystic ovarian syndrome

I had a problem with severe pains that worsened over time. I thought it was due to my PCOS but a sonogram showed that I had a fibroid in my uterine cavity. I had it removed two weeks ago. The pains weren't in my legs though, more in my stomach and lower back. Maybe ask your doctor for a sonogram to rule out a fibroid. Now if there were only a surgery to remove PCOS! Lol
