Our landlords bought us one last year......its not that great. It doesnt cool the room as much as a window unit, and takes up more room than one. Also, you still have to put the vent through the window, so there is really no point. IMO, you're better off gettting a nice window unit.

my parents have one that they say doesn't really get the job done. I don't know the brand or anything.
but i think you're better with a window or in-wall unit.

I agree you are better off getting a window unit. The portable units are less effective than a window unit. They have a long hose that need to be vented out a window anyway. This is the reason they are not as effective....you have this unit sitting in your room, while it is trying to create cool air the unit is heating up so this is why it is counter productive. A window unit on the other hand....the part of the A/C that gets hot from trying to cool the room is hanging out your window. If you are in a basement apartment and can not fit an A/C into the window, IMO I would just buy a fan.
I used to work for an appliance/electronic store and every single summer people would be disappointed with the portable A/C's. Unless the technology has improved I would not buy one IMO.
