I have been an out of work attorney for a few months now (it just didn't work out at my last job situation), and now I'm struggling to decide if I even want to continue being a lawyer. I've been so miserable for so long, and it's been torture looking for a job. I'm also not a type-A personality, arguing, negotiating, cut-throat kind of person you need to be a lawyer.
So I am seriously considering a career change, and FH and family totally support this move. The two choices I'm thinking of are teaching and nursing. Upon research, I'm seeing the job market kind of stinks for both of these fields (not like law firms are really hiring either).
I was wondering if any of you out there who are teachers or nurses have any suggestions. Do you like what you do? Is the market really as bleak as it seems? Would a JD help in either situation?
Any comments are greatly appreciated!

Re: NWR: Possible career change....
I am a Physician Assistant, its 3 years masters with some pre reqs. It is good because unlike med school you dont have to specialize which was big for me because i change what I like all the time. I start my job in July (just graduated) and am going to see my own patients, write scripts, and so on. FM if you have any questions

Re: NWR: Possible career change....
the teaching field is horrendous right now....i've been struggling to find a steady job for the past 5 years.....the school i'm in just had to let go of 4 tenured teachers and they may need to make more cuts...people who have been there for over 10 years are paniacing b/c they may be next I don't know if that would be the best career choice...however, you also need to do what you really like and if that's it then i say go for it anyway...you never know...you can't always predict the job market

What about a speech therapist? You can work in a school or work for an agency. If you're interested in working with kids, it may be an option. I'm a speech therapist in an elementary school and I love my job.

Where did you hear that nursing is bad field to get into?
It's a great field to get into and you can move wherever you want/need to with it *should that ever come up* and there's so many areas you could work in.
If I could do it over again, or if I had the patience to go back to school... I'd definitely go into nursing.

I would definitely go with nursing over teaching!! I know so many people who are nurses and they are always hiring..and they made pretty good money too. Teaching on the other hand is really bad right now. I have been looking for 4 years! I am debating a career change myself because of it.

Re: NWR: Possible career change....
I know I was thinking about doing nursing as well (I have a degree in sports medicine) and StonyBrook has a 1 year program for your B.S. (as long as you have a degree already) It is a tough curriculum, and you seriously go to school for a full year (mon-sat) but then it is over in a year~ The classes run July through June so you wouldn't make this class, but you can get all of your sciece pre-requisite courses out of the way to apply for next year. In something like this, You will get a job right away b/c you are working through stonybrook (and NYU has a 15 month program just like it). However, I know that when I went to Nassau, they said that it can take anywhere from 6-9 months to get a job from there...so maybe it;s just from where you go...HTH!!!!

I hear this as well, but at the same time, my gf graduated with her RN and got licensed a year ago and still can't find a job for some reason.. she's smart, has good grades and decent work experience...and I thought there was a nursing shortage!

The teaching field is pretty bad right now. Maybe by the time you finish your degree it would be better but I wouldn't bank on that. When I had to decide what to get my masters in I thought about education but there weren't at jobs then either. So I just got an MBA instead.
