What kind of dog are you looking for? If you don't mind a mixed breed, North Shore or Bide-A-Wee are both great places to go. FI and I got both our dog (a collie-golden retriever mix) and our cat from North Shore. They have a million dogs, and when you go there someone there listens to what you are looking for, and tries to see what dogs they have there that would be right for you. We were there for hours, and were almost going to leave before they brought out our dog, and we fell in love with him! My family has also had a lot good experiences at Bide-A-Wee in Wantagh, but mostly that was cat-related.
If you really want a purebred dog, you should probably consult with the american kennel association and see what breeders are in your area that you can speak to.

Try checking out Petfinder.com. They have lots of dogs/puppies from all over and a lot of them include pictures and descriptions of the animal. For breed descriptions, you should check out the Westminster Kennel Club's website. They have photos and descriptions of each breed along with information about the breed's temperament. The only thing I will say is that if you choose to buy a puppy, do so only from a reputable breeder and not a pet store.

Thanks girls. we went and looked at the boston Beagle dog and Someone had just put a deposit on it. we also saw a Puggle that Fh really liked. We are going to Bide A wee tommorow and maybe North shore.

Alright....this will be the one and only time I get up on a pedestal and lecture.....
I do SO many animal rescues from the Bronx....it's such a shame to see so many dogs without homes!!! It TRULY breaks my heart when people go out and BUY dogs. You can go to the shelter and adopt a doggie who TRULY NEEDS a home to be loved and cared for!!!!
The shelter doggie may not be a 'pure-bred' or 8 weeks old, but you can find great mutts who are young and just had a run of bad luck. Nothing would make a doggie happier than to go home with a new Mommy on the day before he is to be executed!!!
I have a chow mix at my house now that is looking for a new forever home. I posted about him a couple of months ago and have been looking for a home for a while. He is the BEST dog ever and we may end up keeping him.......but had he gone to a shelter, he would have never gotten a chance at life!!! All of my rescues have found great new homes and all of their vet bills have been paid by me.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go to your local shelter and adopt!!!! You will feel great knowing that you saved your new doggie friend from an untimely death!!!
OK--I'm off the pedestal now....sorry, but this is the one and only thing I am passionate about in life......I have a really big soft spot for animals!!!!

Moosey 911...... DITTO!!!!!!!!!!!! Please muts are the best my dog was 12 when he died in May (I am devestated) THE BAST FREIND I EVER HAD!!!!! Please puppy mills and breeders really mess them up. My boss is a millianaire and she bought a dog for 4000.00! The sweetie died of a liver problem in 1 1/2 yrs. Please check out local shelters.
