NWR: Puppies

Original post by littlepixie12

Ladies, FH and I decided that after the wedding and HM we are going to come back and buy a puppy.. We want a little yorkie but if we fall in love with a maltese that works too lol

I have been researching like crazy, but wanted opinions.. can anyone recommend where to purchase a healthy happy puppy??

Thanks!

See if you can find one to adopt first.. there are so many doggies that need good homes

We adopted our dog fom the Bideawee in wantagh.. its closed now but they have other locations.

If not then go through a breeder, not a pet store..

I have a cocker and I bought her at a pet shop.
I was turned down by a reputable breeder because she felt that the dog was going to be left alone for too long and that the dog needed more room to run.

Mind you- I lived a block from Prospect Park AND sent my dog to doggy daycare 3 times per week.
So, while a breeder is the best source....some are very difficult to deal with. Shop around, some have applications that you have to fill out....other are more lax. Good luck!!!!

I really wanted the experience of raising a puppy and I wanted a purebred 8 week old cocker so pet finder was not an option for me.

try rescue organizations or bideawee (they have a location out east and in NYC) or even yuor local town pound.

I have always had pets and the best ones were always the ones we adopted.

I also recommend petfinder.com, my mom got one of our cats from there and she is awesome. If they don't have any dogs that are local you can see if they can bring them from another state, that is what was done with my moms cat, she came from Georgia.

I got my yorkie through a breeder. He's AWESOME. He gave us all the information we needed as first time puppy owners! He let us give him a deposit and we pay him the rest in installments everyt 2 weeks, he gives the puppy his shots and is on call 24/7! I am so glad we went through a breeder!

We got our baby (a wheaton terrier - pics in album) at Worldwide Puppies and Kittens in Bellmore.

They were a pleasure and super knowledgeable. Our puppy was perfectly healthy and is now 2! They grow up so fast!!!

please don't buy through a breeder or a pet store- try petfinder.com

theres so many rescues out there that are for specific breeds and these dogs desperately need homes. And theres tonnnns of the little dogs because women buy them and have them as their little purse companions and then get sick of them and give them up.

im not trying to be preachy btw....it just makes me sad when people will spend $600 for a dog when theres perfectly healthy ones that are on the verge of death bc their previous owners were too irresponsible to take care of them.

I got my amazing dog at a shelter. She's a purebred mini chocolate poodle (I have asthma & needed a certain breed), has a loving disposition, was house & leash trained when I got her 5 years ago. I recommend you spend time with the dog before you adopt it, b/c it's a 10+ year commitment! Shelters usually have a dog pen you can take the dog, run around, play etc... www.petfinder.com is a great start, but I recommend you go to shelters as well. I happened to stumble across my little girl on accident when I went to the Islip Shelter.
I can't get a pic to post :(
Good luck!
