21st avenue and what street? i lived off of 21st avenue but more by steinway, 41st street around that area. Do you mean right by astoria park? well some of those buildings right there are marine terrace projects, its not like regular projects, its extremely small and just a few short blocks and its pretty safe regardless, ive walked through there many times, or theres also some buildings right across the river BUT the problem there is the noise factor bc it gets real busy at astoria park, ppl parking their cars and hanging out, motorcycles going up and down everyday and parking there is a nightmare. But 21st avenue is pretty big and expands a long way.
Well one block up from 21st avenue is Ditmars Boulevard, so as far as restaurants theres tons around that area, since ditmars is a big blvd in astoria with lots to do. RIGHT on 21st street and ditmars there is an elementary school and from what i know they have a great magnet program. Theres also catholic schools such as st. francis that is on 21st avenue and 45th street. Theres quite a few schools you have options of.

well it looks quiet now bc its winter but that is RIGHT up the block from astoria park so once spring comes around and it gets even a little warm, just keep in mind that it gets very lively around there, and theres tons of teenagers and people in their early 20's who all go there to hang out, play loud music, big motorcycle crews go there and youll see like 30-50 motorcycles parked in a row and they go all up and down the strip doing tricks. Once on the news they did this thing about noise in NYC and astoria park was #1 on their list of noise complaints. If its 21st street its not as bad bc you wont be able to hear it as much. If its 19th street you are alot closer. My friend used to live on 19th street and 21st avenue. As long as you dont mind living by astoria park then its fine. Just know in the summer there will be LOTS of people around

yeah like i said if its 21st its not as bad, if its 19th street, there is a deli on the corner of 19th street and ditmars right up the block from 21st avenue and alot of ppl also hang out there in the summer, they park their cars by the deli and hang out. BUt if you are all the way up the block then shouldn't effect you really. Right on the corner by 21st and 21st avenue is a big gas station and chinese food take out right across the street, and thats where you are a little bit further from the park so again you shouldnt really hear the noise. I also had another friend who lived on 21st and 20th ave and the noise at astoria park didnt effect her. But you have alot around you, you are right by ditmars and theres LOTS of shops, restaurants, lounges, bars. Plus you are not far from 59th street or other highways which is a plus
ETA: saw your question about buses, not sure though. I always took the train from astoria and not really the bus. BUT on Ditmars where there is most of the bus stations you do see them come often, and theres a bus stop right on 21st and ditmars

You're welcome, if you have any other questions feel free to fm me. I grew up in astoria and love the neighborhood, I had wanted to move back now lol but maybe later on down the road we will. I love it bc its so culturally diverse which i think is great, you have so much to do around, great restaurants, and other things to do. You are also SOOO close to the city. When i used to take the N train from ditmars blvd, its under 15 mins to lexington, or if you take 21st street straight down by the avenues in the 30s thats where 59th street bridge is and within 5-10 mins youre in manhattan.

hahaha yes very important, and i can recommend restaurants and other things to do. Actually since you have a daughter i just realized its great to live by astoria park, i mean we always hung out at the strip but to go inside of astoria park theres a park for kids, theres nice big grassy area and would be good for her, theres also a pool and other activities. Plus theres an elementary school like 1-2 blocks away. Good luck

Re: NWR- queens and astoria girls help!
I actually live around the corner. small world.
I'm on 21st Road between Shore Blvd. and 19th Street. I know exactly the buildings you're talking about. They are decent, it's quiet but in the warmer months, there tend to be kids hanging out on the corner of 21st street and 21st avenue....it seems like your daughter is young where you'll always be with her so nothing to worry about.
The bus- Q69 IS NOT that regular. Sometimes you have to wait a while. I usually end up walking to and from the subway- 17 mins. It's best to have the bus schedule and try to time it off of that.
The public school- PS122 is really good, as is the local catholic school- Immaculate Conception. The library by the subway station has lots of programs for kids. Overall, Astoria is a fantastic neighborhood, you're on the outskirts but it's quiet and safe and you'll save on rent.

dh went to 122 for JHS. He got into their magnet program or some special program, its supposed to be real good if you can get into that program, but i know its also elementary school and its good. Theres also PS 84 and PS 85 but i think 122 is better, although i went to PS 84 and wasnt bad, its a small school so more personal. Theres only 2 classes per grade. ALso a bit further is PS.2, its not that close to you but not that far. DH lived a bit further from there but went to elementary school there.

Re: NWR- queens and astoria girls help!
Yes, please look in 122, my two siblings and I went all went there. They have a gifted school within 122 which goes up to 8th grade...most of the kids go to the Sci. high schools from there. Candidates can begin testing for admission in 3rd grade and again in 5th grade. Well worth it.

I used to live in Astoria in between the 'good side' and the 'bad side'. I would get home very late from work and nothing bad ever happened. I wish i never moved. You can eat all types of food in Astoria. A lot of places open really late. If you want to go to the movies it's there! to a bar! it's there! park! it's there. Loved it!
