NWR: Question about Bat Mitzvah gift.

My daughter was invited to the first of a few Bar/Bat Mitzvahs this year. Alot of her friends are having them...
My question is, what is an appropriate amount to give? I was thinking $50 --- and $75 for a REALLY good friend...

Any advice would be appreciated. TIA!!

Give in multiples of $18...18 is a lucky number in Judaism.

$54 or $72 is appropriate I think.

aaah Bat/Bar Mitzvah's... my home away from home (i'm a dancer at them).

It's sad to say that normally i've seen the same ettiqute that is done at weddings (since some mitzvah's are at the high end places lol). IMO, this time i'd take into consideration how close she is to these friends. Close friend i'd do $80. Not close i'd do $50.

100% correct. I just gave this advice the other day. Do multiples of 18.

its Chai, it means life. So you are giving Chai.

Re: NWR: Question about Bat Mitzvah gift.

I've been to about 10 bar and bat mitzvahs in the past few years because all my little cousins seem to be during 13 around the same time. I have another next Saturday.

As a family member, I usually give about $150 for me and FH when we go together, $100 if I go alone to a family member's.

When I was 13 (which was 17 freaking years ago!!!) we used to give $36 (2 x ch'ai) or sometimes $50. These days, I've found that my cousins really like it if you give them part of their gift in a check and part in cash or a gift card. A lot of parents will let the children keep the gifts that aren't checks and the rest goes into savings for them.

I think if you gave $50 for a friend, you'd be fine. Multiples of 18 are fine and will be understood, but not necessary. Think about it in terms of covering the plate, just like you might for a wedding gift. A plate for a 13 y/o or 12 y/o is usually half price, so $50 is usually fine.

Just jumping in to agree, too. Of course, if adults (parents) are invited, you give much more. But children/friends give $54 or $72.

Thank you!! Yes, it's just my daughter being invited to all these friends parties.. I think for her friends she'll give $54 each.... then a girl she's been friend with since kindergarten she'll give $72!! Thank you all so much for the advice/info!!
