NWR: Quick opinion? I have 40 minutes!

...kay, so just now my manager just gave me and the other girl I work with a gift bag for christmas filled with holiday cookies, and an envelope/card with a $50 bill in it, as a thank you for the holidays. I'm like flipping out because I need this and am so excited bcause I didnt' expect to get anything from her and it's $50, which is very nice.

But - then we go back to our desks, and the girl I work with whispers, 'so, you think we should get her something?' and hesitating, i just said yes, but I'm pissed b/c i dont' want to spend what she just gave us!! Because then what was the point of getting that!?

And she's like, 'Should we get her $100 gift card to a spa?' And my heart sank because that's just handing over the $50 bill I just got!! So yadda yadda I decided to say that 'we really shouldn't give her what she gave us because that's almost weird. It's like we used her money to get her something.' So she goes, 'Okay, so $75?' I just said, okay, but that's basically $40 each!!! $40 of the $50 I just got!!!

What should I do! I really wanted to use that money for something besides giving it right back to my manager!!!

Do I just have to?I just feel like if we think of a better idea, I can go to Molly before the end of the day and say, 'Hey - I was thinking about Kathleen's present and I think maybe instead we should do this...' Like maybe just a card from each of us and a bottle of wine!?!? Help me!!!

I say go and get your own gift. Get a nice scarf set from the GAP! They are having HUGE sales this week!
If your work doing any sort of secret sants or something? BC if they are that should cover it.

Really though.. what you do depends on how you feel about it. And you don't necessarily have to go in with the other co-worker. If she wants to then she can get a $50 gift cert and you can just give her a regular gift on your own. It's not a competition and you are of no obligation to join with her to do something together. Perhaps just send her a Christmas arrangement of flowers.

That's a really great point :)Thank you! I'm just going to be honest with her. She's a single gal that has NONE of the wedding expenses I have right now... it stinks but its true.

The general rule is to never gift up, only gift down. The exception is if you are personally close friends with your manager.
