NWR: rent or wait to buy....

Ok, I currently live in a basement apartment in a relatives house. I am welcome to stay (for very cheap rent) after the wedding for as long as I like. This way we can save for a house. But, I would really like to just get an apartment and move out right after the wedding so I can be with my FH. I really want out of the basement, but I know it would be smarter to stay and save for a house. What would you do?

Re: NWR: rent or wait to buy....

I would stay. JMO. Just think of how much money you could save! And the house you could get! No one wants to live in a basement, but it sure will help you in the long run!

But like I said JMO.

Re: NWR: rent or wait to buy....

I wish I had a backup like you did so i could take advantage of it, it is so hard to find a house right now. Guess it depends if you get lucky but i wish I didnt have to stress over the wedding and a place to live all at the same time.

Re: NWR: rent or wait to buy....

I know saving is the sensible thing to do. I am looking so forward to living with him, and I dont know how much privacy we will have living downstairs from my family! Ahhhhh but a house would be wonderful!

Re: NWR: rent or wait to buy....

IMO I'd save! We did for 1 year and ended up with a house we love and NO RENT!!!!! It's all ours! But, you have to do what you are happy with. If you can **** it up for another year, then I'd say definately save for a house. I f you hate it where you are, then I'd move out ASAP. You have to weigh your pros and cons!

Best of luck!
Kelly

Re: NWR: rent or wait to buy....

I can relate! My fiance and I live in a studio apartment and it's really tight. But...we think staying here is the best way to save a reasonable down payment on a house. Good luck!

Re: NWR: rent or wait to buy....

My FH and I are in the same situation. It is so expensive to live on LI. We are going to stay in the basement of a relatives house as long as we can to save money. Especially since the wedding is so expensive!!!

Re: NWR: rent or wait to buy....

We are both at home too. THere is really nothing out there right now worth the money they are asking for. I'm getting a little stressed out about the living situation. We both rather not rent, but if we don't find a house by the wedding we might have to.

Re: NWR: rent or wait to buy....

Sounds like you have a good deal, so if you can hold out and save for a house, do that. With housing prices the way they are, if you moved into an apartment now, you'd just have to wait longer for your house.

Re: NWR: rent or wait to buy....

christy, that is only your choice to make, but i will tell you what FH and i have decided to do. Before the wedding & for the first couple of months we are going to try to live in an apartment that is a month to month, rather than one that we have to sign a lease for so that we can buy a house for us to live in with our future children!

good luck in your choice!!!!!!!!!

Re: NWR: rent or wait to buy....

Stay with your relatives. It's not like you'll be living in their den, you have your own apartment right? What an awesome way to save money! I wish someone in my family would extend such an offer to us :(
