NWR - restaurant DEADBEAT vent

NWR - restaurant DEADBEAT vent

Why would a couple come into a restaurant/sports bar on a Saturday night, order dinner and drinks, and sneak out without paying their check! ?

My daughter works her butt off waiting tables, and the unpaid check comes out of her tips for the night!!!

The guy actually wrote in a tip amount but left the check on the table unpaid. I am so angry! Do people think they are cheating the restaurant? Well they are not, b/c the hard-working waitress/waiter has to pick up the tab for the dinner they just stuffed in their mouths!!! Grrrr!

Sorry, vent over.

that doesn't make any sense to me. It's not the waiter/waitress's fault that these people left without paying?

jess im a waitress too and she is right....it's not fair that it comes out of our pockets, but your bosses would say that they think you should be keeping a better eye on your tables. We're human and can only do so much, and that just ***** when it costs us because someone else is an a-hole. The stories waitresses could tell you. I've had people leave movie gift cards instead of the restaurant gift card. Just the other day i had a 100.00 check and they didn't even bother to leave a tip. Fair or not, depending on the place and depending on how long you have been there, the management, etc.... it can come out of the waitresses pocket if people sneak out

The restaurant makes the server pay? Is that usual in the restaurant business? It seems incredibly unfair. Servers aren't bouncers or security, how are they supposed to force deadbeats to pay? Unless I'm wrong and this is a common thing, your daughter should get another job. If they treat her this way in one thing, I'm sure they're unfair in other ways.

Very sorry about that. Some people are just idiots. And they're probably congratulating themselves for their sneakiness. So not cool.

Edit--Wow, it seems like it is common practice to charge the server from reading the other posts. That *****. Management shouldn't do that.

Thanks to all of you for your support and sympathy, it helps to make us feel better. Believe it or not, when she first worked there, someone (foolishly) left cash in the folder, and some other putz stole the cash and threw the folder behind the table. Note to self: don't leave cash, hand it to the waitress!

Yes they expect you to be efficient, personable AND security guard all in one

It only takes one jackazz to ruin your night. Gotta focus on all the good and friendly people she meets night after night, this one should meet his karma, and soon!

i've worked in a few restaurants and only once have i had to actually pay for an idiot customer. In a chain restaurant (corporations not privately owned) a person is more likely to have to pay because one the cash is usually kept on them all night and then they turn in whatever they sold at the end of the night, and there is usually much more turn around. I know in my restaurant now I have had to pay once, and fortunately the person came in a week later realizing the mistake they had made (really built up my trust that not all a-holes do it intentionally). It is really unfair and I do not think it should be done the way it is, but it's the way it works.

I have also worked in private restaurants where first off I have to say it happens less often (the walk outs) and secondly because the person that owns the business is there they can make the final decision. A manager with a walk out has to explain the missing check to someone who has to explain to someone else when the server is not held responsible which is another reason servers are held responsible in corporation restaurants. I know in the private places I worked after each table left I had to take their check up to the front or bar or wherever we paid, so i was never carrying money on me (except for tips). So it really is a PITA thing, and can be horrible, but i also can see it from both sides being a server and helping out management (in corporations and private restaurants).

Re: NWR - restaurant DEADBEAT vent

According to my fiance, who has some experience, it's actually against the law for the restaurant to do that--to take an upaid bill out of the server's pay. I'm sure that's why they take it out of the tips, not the actual pay. And I'm sure it's more than her job is worth to point that out to the management, but if she was thinking of leaving anyway, it's a good point. Or someone might want to call it in anonymously. It does sound very wrong to me, and I'm not surprised it's against the law. I worked in retail for quite a few years, and I knew that if your drawer came out short, the company could NOT take that money out of your paycheck. They could fire you over it, or they could even charge you with petty larceny or something, but they couldn't take it out of your pay. It's the same thing.
