Has anyone ever had one? I had one last week and have been in terrible pain all week. I can't eat anything and it kills if i close my mouth and the top teeth hit where I had the root canal. I don't know what to do or how long this will go on for.

Re: NWR: Root Canals
Try this....drink something hot...if you have lots of sensitivity to the hot drink you should call you dentist immediatly.

Also...this link may help you answer some more questions;
http://www.stateendodontics.com/procedure6.htm#1
Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help you. You can also take over the counter pain relievers to help. Another thing I am thinking is that if you don't have pain from the hot drink that the pain my be caused by the way your upper teeth contact your lower teeth when you close your mouth. The nerves in your mouth can sense if there is a change in the way your teeth contact eachother and this can cause pain. Do you know what kind of crown your dentist placed on the tooth you recieved treatment? If you do not have the heat sensitivity I would suggest you have you dentist check you occlusion (the way your upper teeth contact your lower teeth).
Hope some of this helps!

Re: NWR: Root Canals
also to address anothe possiblity...Pain to chewing or pressure may take some time to heal (sometimes up to 6 weeks). Pain from a neighboring tooth can sometimes be confused as pain from the tooth just treated. If there is sensitivity to heat no matter what you should scedule an appointment with your dentist.

Call your dentist...... the pain might be because something is wrong, or there is another problem tooth.
If not, he can give you something for the pain.

Re: NWR: Root Canals
He was convinced on Tuesday that I would feel pain. He gave me Motrin 800 to take every 4 to 6 hours, but I've been taking it every 2 and I still have pain. I am going tomorrow because I am supposed to have the crown put on so I will tell him. I had one like 10 years ago and wasn't in pain then. I feel like the filling isn't closed or something. My gum is swollen too.

Good thing you are seeing your dentist tomorrow. Def tell him your concerns, If you had a pretty big infection before the root canal it is likely that you could feel some pain while the infection was healing and why your gums are swollen. Were your gums very swollen prior to your endodontic (root canal) treatment? I am not a dentist yet....just at the beginning of my second year of dental school. Really what should be of major concern is the heat sensitivity we discussed before. Even if the filling wasn't closed (and if it isn't that should be corrected) you would not feel heat sensitivty because the nerve to that tooth has been removed. It is unlikely that your densist left behind any of the nerve. However, if you did have a large infection when you went for your root canal other nerves in the surrounded teeth may be irritated.
I am sure your dentist did a great procedure on you.
Whenever you have dental concerns it is always best to disucess them with your dental care provider.

Re: NWR: Root Canals
my root canal didn't hurt me one bit. I suppose my doc numbed me just enough. All I felt was a slight pressure afterward but not pain

Re: NWR: Root Canals
I've had like 4 root canals done. You're really not supposed ot have any pain at all after the treatment except for soreness. They kill the nerve in the tooth, clean it out and put filling over it so the pain really has no more use anymore except to stay there.
Vicodin helps with teeth problems. you might want to try that. IF the pain persists, please go back to the dentist. I've had my share of bad luck with the dentist already.
IT could also be as your top teeth is hitting the bottom one, it might be sensitive. They should file down the filling for you because that's probaly what's causing the pressure.

That is a LOT of motrin! Is there anyway he can see you today? It sounds like there is something not quite right.

Thank you for all of your great advice. I tried the heat test with a cup of tea and there is no sensitivity to heat. Same thing with cold liquid. It only hurts from the pressure. When I close my mouth, even if I chew on the other side, if something hits the root canal side, I see stars.
As far as I know, there was no infection before. I saw the dentist because a piece of my tooth chipped off and he said I was in need of a root canal. Nothing bothered my tooth or gum even with the piece chipped off. This pain started the day after my root canal.

Re: NWR: Root Canals
That is great that you do not have the heat sensitivity....that tells you that the nerve was removed and that the treatment was done correctly!. Some of the materials we use to isolate the tooth can cause irritation to the gums like you described, which in time will heal. It sounds to me like the problem is due to the way your teeth are contacting eachother when you bit. Also, since you are wearing your temporary it is possible that something got under the temporary and is adding to the pain. When you go to the dentist tomorrow and he places the crown he/she will check your bite and adjust it so that it is comforitable for you. Even after your visit tomorrow it may take a few days to get used to the crown but pain should go away.

Re: NWR: Root Canals
I just went through the same thing. You might just need a bite adjustment. The swelling can push the tooth up, and then when you bite down it is painful. Hope everything works out. If you need a great endodontist I have one...

Re: NWR: Root Canals
i have worked for a dentist for over 10 yrs it sounds alot like a bite issue to me ,, also jess before they place the crown they should be putting in a post and core to strengthen the tooth and if your still having pain they should wait even to have the crown placed ... have them adjust the bite and wait a few days and see if the pain gets better .... if not you might have a fracture below the gumline that would give you some pain.

Re: NWR: Root Canals
Yeah, I've had a few root canals too. The pain is always less afterwards then before with the infection. Definately call your dentist first thing tomorrow. You shouldn't have to suffer. Tooth pain is the worst.
