NWR: RP House Hunting in Lindenhurst

FH and I are house hunting. . . . on a very small budget. We have found a great one (3 BRm Kitchen, dining room, den, full basement, pool, etc. etc.) for a GREAT price in Lindenhurst.

I am such a city and Nassau girl and so anything west of Wantagh is like China to me.... I would love to hear pros, cons, etc. about Lindenhurst. FYI: the house is north of Sunrise Highway on 54th street... not in the Village of Lindenhurst.

Thanks....

ETA: It's 'DH and I are househunting...' I've been so used to calling him FH on this site!!

I moved to Lindenhurst about a year ago. Personally, I'm not a fan of the area but it's definitely changing for the better b/c it is one of the few affordable areas for young families. The school district is pretty good (my future step-daughter goes there and it's been good). The best part about Lindy is that it's bayfront. We are boaters so that's a big plus for us. If you have specific questions, just FM me.

Same here! We spend all summer going out of Venetian Shores

My FH has a house in north Lindy with his brother and we're buying him out, so I'll be living there too come this November. I'm not quite sure where 54th st. is in relation to his place, but I like the area that he's in. The houses are cute & very well maintained and his neighbors are all pretty nice. We're a little closer to Rt. 109 than I would prefer (traffic at 5:30pm stinks), but we're also really close to a bunch of local stores, the movie theaters, the parks & lots of other things that keep us busy. If you like getting out & about, there are lots of things to do in the N. Lindy area...HTH!

I have been i lindenhurst for 28 years. The village is a bit better then North of sunrise hwy but that is not saying north of sunrise is crappy. It use to be the closer you are to 109/ typically is the less 'desirable' area. Honestly THAT IS HOW IT WaS YEARS AGO i mean you still have rentals in lindenhurst (rental house, two family homes) over on that end but most of the people care about their places here. I will be renting probably near there and i can say i care about what my place looks like. I love my town and would live anywhere with in it. The mayor truly cares about the town and the people here he lives right near me and I know him (he is family).

The town is amazing, everything is walking distance. The school district is pretty good and there is a good community based around it.

The only nasty parts that i wouldn't go near to live is actually right on the train tracks about five blocks from my house off of hoffman. (south of sunrise) it is where the low income mini apartment buildings are. Approx three of them very small and contained. They are a little scary and wish they weren't there but the mayor is on the landlords butts to fix the buildings so they at least appear 'nice.'

We have our own coffee shop that is great - spoon, many nice restaurants, supermarkets, cvs, plenty of interesting stores all in the town center.

My DH and I just bought a house in Lindenhurst!!! It's a cape on a nice quiet street, but it needs a little bit of work. I am Stony Brook girl, so I had a really hard time adjusting to Lindenhurst, but I really love having my own place. The school districts are ok, and the neighborhood is ok over there. It's great for us as a starter house!
Good Luck!
We may be practically neighbors!

FH and I have a house on the water - our section is nice - but there are areas that are the complete opposite

I have lived in Lindenhurst all my life and I love it. 54th street isnt bad. The schools are decent and there are many stores in the area. You are close to the beach and highways. After I get married, I want to stay here and raise my family.

If you have any questions FM me

Re: NWR: RP House Hunting in Lindenhurst

My FH and I own a house in the village. My FH is from Lindy, and he thinks it's the shangri-la of Long Island. I beg to differ. I would rate it as OK. Some blocks are really nice, some are really trashy. I find the village to be a PITA. I'm a lawyer, I do everything legally and by the books, get permits, etc. and they bust our chops CONSTANTLY for our home improvements. Meanwhile, the house across the street was FREAKING CONDEMNED and there are illegal apartments all over my block but apparently that's not as big of an issue as inspecting my shed that was put up legally with the proper permits.

Personally, I can't wait to move. But I agree that the neighborhood is improving and the village does do a nice job of keeping it clean. They could stand to update the main drag. There is definitely a large community spirit. If I had to do it all over again, I would not buy a house here but if I HAD to, I would try to go south of the rail road tracks. I know the area you are referring to, and that's a good central location with easy access to the highways which is a plus.

Good luck in your decision!

I grew up in Lindenhurst (South of Montauk Hwy) then lived in an apartment closer to Sunrise, now live in an apartment near Venetian Shores.

I think its a pretty nice town...they need to get rid of some of the eyesores- the old, closed down bowling alley, empty lots, etc. but its coming along.

Do I know any of you lindy people? I graduated class of 99, FH is class of 01.
