NWR: slowcookers...

Original post by annoulaksMOH

Have you used one before? Has your house burned down in the process?

So I got a new job and because of the commute home I'll be rushed on time to make dinner so I've been thinking about a slowcooker. Set it and let the food be done by the time i get home. I'm worried though that when i get home my house will be done too.

Husband offered to cook but when he cooks he also dirties 18 bowls in the process (no matter what he makes)... and then I do the clean up.

Funny how I give notice and the first thing to cross my mind is how to make dinner in time. Priorities priorities.

Santa Fe Chicken
Serves 5 or 6

1 (15 oz) can black beans, rinsed and drained
2 (15 1/4 oz) cans whole kernel corn, drained
1 cup bottles thick and chunky salsa
5 or 6 boneless, skinless chicken
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

In a 3 and a half or 4 quart electric crockpot mix together the beans, corn and half cup salsa. Top with chicken breasts then pour the remaining cup of salsa over the chicken.

Cover and cook on the high heat setting for 2 and a half to 3 hours or until the chicken is tender and white throughout. Do not overcook or the chicken will toughen. Sprinkle the cheese on top and cover and cook just until the cheese melts, about 5 minutes.

Serve with chopped scallions, tomatoes and tortilla chips on the side.

that's another favorite of mine!

Re: NWR: slowcookers...

yeah well - i got one for my birthday 2 years ago....JUUUST tried to use it this weekend with pot rost - the whole place smelled like burning plastic - and no there was no packaging left on. i did have it on high though. i never used it just because of that same fear of coming home to a burning kitchen - i guess this is just a freak thing though?? hmmm. it was a rival smartpot - the one you girls mention where it goes to 'warm' after its done. didn't last using it more than 30min though and i put the pot roast over onto the stove.

and yes - there were the tinyest little 'streams' of smoke coming from around the control panel and one of the sides.

i would marry my slowcooker if it asked. i set it on low and leave all day. my advance is to be sure the outlet is good. if you have questionable wiring then i wouldnt chance it.

Re: NWR: slowcookers...

ok....

a) i love that a thread about slowcookers has gone to 2 pages. lol

b) i'm totally getting one now!

c) i'm having a mental brainfart right now, but totally by coincidence I opened up a magazine last night and it was an article about slowcookers. I think it's a sign. God wants me to have one.

Here's the one I registered for: RIVAL 5-quart slow cooker.. I've never used one- but remember we did growing up. Does anyone have this one? It was a good price & seemed to do what I want it to....

Re: NWR: slowcookers...

i LOVE my slowercooker...if you need recipes FM me!!!!

Here's one for anyone who wants it....

Chicken with Stuffing

Mix flour, salt, pepper, and some garlic.
Coat Chicken Breast with the Mixed Flour
Brown them in a frying pan

Layer chicken breasts at bottom of crock pot
add 1 layer of broccoli florettes
add 1 or 2 cans (depends on size of pot) of Cream of Chicken, Cream of Mushroom, Cream of Broccoli, or Cream of Asparagus soup (USE ONE FLAVOR!)

Add one (or 2 if you have the army size crock pot like your's truly) box of Stove Top Stuffing (I get the chicken herb blend) on top of the previously layered concoction.

Set it and Forget it!!!!! This goes over reallllly big with anyone who has ever had it. I think I'm making it tonight if FH doesn't take me out :)

Re: NWR: slowcookers...

only thing I want to caution is, if you leave it on for 8 or 10 hours, make sure you have a lot of food in there.

I tried making a small amount (i.e. 2-3 servings of some chicken/sausage jambalaya) and it was burned by the end of that length of time.

I mostly use mine for roasts, 2-4 pounds, food this size doesn't burn and comes out SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO yummy!

you said jambalaya. I recently fell in love with jambalaya.

I made it for the first time the weekend of Mardi Gras and it was sooooo good. Can't wait to try it in a slowcooker.

Re: NWR: slowcookers...

Lol yeah I'm still scared the slow cooker will burn down my house when I'm not there, especially since I have my dog at home...

I leave it on the stove, and turn on the fan as precautions.

I LOVE these recipes, please keep them coming. Btw, I am AWFUL at cooking - for example the previous post of adding onion mix +meat, etc sounded sooo good, but I wouldn't know how much of what to add and for how long...
