NWR (sorry) - Where should WE live/look for a house?

NWR (sorry) - Where should WE live/look for a house?

The wife and I are anxious to start a family, but I want us to have a house before we start the family.
This way shes not moving boxes and painting while pregnant.

She grew up in Manhattan, and I grew up in Flushing, therefore we are not familiar with many towns in LI.

Here are our requirements, please help us find some nice towns to look at.
1. She works long hours in Manhattan, so the commute needs to be less than 1 hour each way. (either LIRR or express bus)
2. Good school district.
3. In Queens or LI so that my family can help with the kids
4. 3 bedroom, 2 baths, basement for approx. 600k
5. SAFE

number 5 is an important part.
You are thinking 'you fool, who doesn't want to live in a safe place?'

There is a difference btw: safe when I am with the husband vs safe when I am walking the street alone.

Big issue is my job requires me to be in another state sunday night through friday.
She will be living alone in the house for 5 nights a week.

So I want someplace SAFE.
For her and eventually my children.

I do not know of many towns, here are the towns I know of that fulfill the 5 points -
Queens: Oakland Gardens, Douglaston, Fresh Meadows, Little Neck
LI: Great Neck, that is all I know of right now.

it's a little east in nassau but syosset, jericho and cold spring harbor are all great schools and very safe...also usually rather expensive...but if your budget is 600K you should be able to find something....commute via train is about 1 hr to city....

We bought a house last year and this is the info I got
redfin.com will be your best friend
you can put in what you want in a house and search by different towns to see the difference in value

Hicksville has the lowest property tax in Nassau and it has a main LIRR station
Levittown has one of the highest

For the amount you want to spend you can get a nice size house in the following areas
Bethpage
Hicksville
Levittown

The higher north you go the more you have to pay for a smaller house

Ditto - The Hicksville train station Rocks - 40 mins on express trains and there's always a train stopping there..

Have fun, good luck

Lynbrook - incorporated village, has its own police force and schools are great- make sure you are looking for lynbrook with lynbrook schools- it is District 20, otherwise you could go to Hewlett, Valley Stream, East Rockaway or Malverne. Hewlett is also a very good district but taxes are extremely high. Lynbrook also has two LIRR lines, the Babylon and Long Beach lines so it is easy to catch a train out of Penn Station. Rockville centre is a great town too but you will get more house for your money in Lynbrook or if you are in the better part of East Rockaway that goes to Lynbrook (close to Hewlett Harbor). Another town I would look at is Garden City but you will be in a modest house for 600 but extremely safe for your wife to be on her own.HTH!!

East williston, williston park, roslyn,

all these towns have great school districts, top rated, and close to trains. very safe...

also,
, floral park has good schools, their own police force instead of nassau county cops, and the train commute to the city is 35 minutes...everyone is within walking distance of the train station basically.

my family grew up in flushing, and we all ended up in the great neck, manhasset and port washington area.

i think you should definitely look into port washington. it is such a lovely town with SO many families. the commute into the city during rush hour is only 30 min, and it's the most dependable line on the LIRR. it's only 20 min from flushing/bayside. lots of great restaurants, and just a gorgeous little port town.

I live in Oakland Gardens and this neighborhood is going downhill. Lots of car break-ins and thefts recently.

Maybe look into Syosset, Bethpage, and East Meadow.
