NWR: Student Teaching

Hey girls,

I just started student teaching 2 weeks ago...

9th grade Italian in a NYC Public School....so far it's been ok but I can't get rid of how nervous I feel all the time....I'm fine in front of the class but I am constantly thinking about what to do with them and what if something goes wrong....

To all you teachers out there....Is this normal and how can I get over this?

HELP

Things do go wrong so you'll quickly get over the what if something goes wrong worry. Don't stress yourself out. I used to go nuts over planning perfect lessons - now I do all my planning each morning about an hour before the day starts. With time comes experience and comfort in teaching. Stick with it! Good luck!

man...i was a wreck my first student teaching placement! I was nervous, second guessed everything...a mess.

Just realize...you are there to learn not only what you should do but what you SHOULDNT do. It is ok to make mistakes. Dont be afraid, dive right in and you will be fine!

I know how you feel! My first semester of student teaching I was so anxious all the time about how my lessons would go. I would worry about every little detail and would often spend hours and hours just to plan one lesson. It got so bad that I was having trouble sleeping. But as I got more and more used to it, it got easier and I relaxed a lot. By my second semester of student teaching, I got quicker at planning lessons and found it easier to adjust my lessons when things went wrong. The more experience you have with teaching, the easier it gets. Just hang in there and know that it will get better! Good luck!

I still get nervous sometimes when thinking about a lesson! But it gets easier and easier...I used to spend hours each night and all weekend planning, but I have slowed now because I am getting more comfortable. It takes time, but it WILL get easier!

With any job you will feel that way until you get into your own groove. The feeling you are having will soon pass and then you will be fine.

i cried almost every single day when i was student teaching from all the stress. it takes time, but eventually teaching starts to feel like a normal, manageable job. the things is your first year is going to be just as bad in terms of stress--don't let it get you down.

i was nervous 100% of the time during my part-time student teaching... i only got really comfortable about a quarter of the way during my full time student teaching, so its definitely normal to be nervous...

the one bit of advice id give you is to just be confident... the kids know when youre nervous.

I agree with everyone...the more you teach the more confident you become. I don't know how your cooperating teacher is but ask him/her for help as well. He/she should be giving you some confidence to build on.

I think that I will be doing my student teaching next semester and I am a nervous wreck myself. I think that you will be more relaxed once you get used to the kids and the environment!

I'm doing my special ed student teaching right now and I did my general ed student teaching last semester. At first it is very nerve racking but I promise, it will get better. Just relax and have fun with it. You are there to learn so don't stress if you make a mistake! You'll be great!

The more you do it the more the feeling will go away. There is a lot of pressure at the beginning but it will go away. What matters is your work with the kids.

Don't wory about it!! I started teaching at a camp when iw as like 16 and i had those nerves because some of the kdis were OLDER THAN ME!!! It goes away. Go in there and force ur confidence!

Just make sure you always have ENOUGH work. Always overprepare. As long as you keep them busy you will have no problems...and be consistent. Don't look scared. You are the one in charge!
