NWR: taxes POLL

NWR: taxes POLL

Just wondering if anyone has any advice as far as taxes.. I always do my own and get a pretty good amount back, but some people from work (i am a teacher in NYC) say they have someone do them and they get more money back.. does anyone have any confirmation on this? The guy charges like $175... is it worth it to do this and maybe get more back?

TIA!

also, if you do it yourself online, what programs do you use?

I have them done professionally so I'm no help...sorry! I use my dad's accountant that he's been using for years.

If you're doing the 1040 or 1040ez form then Turbo Tax online (free for federal, $30 for state). Any other form I'd suggest finding an accountant. $150 seems a bit steep to do them (unless they're really complicated) so I'd look around a little more.

I use Turbo Tax, but I only file a 1040-EZ. I went to H&R Block a few years ago and they charged $99 and the guy had no idea what he was doing since I pay estimated tax, so I never went back.

I thought 175 seemed like a lot, I just don't know if he will get me more money.... like rightnow I am going to get about 1600 back, will he really get me more money?

My guy charges alot, but I always get a nice return. I feel like he bases it on what he gets you because I know people that have gone to him and he has charged different. He's also located on 42nd Street and 6th Avenue..lol Im sure rent is high

I am an accounting major... I actually did them on turbo first (the free addition and never sent them threw) then did them on my own and mine were 1200 more. If you know what your doing I think you can do them on your own.. if not prof. I didnt do mine threw turbo though. I had a lot of papers this year with 3 jobs, 401k, intererst on school, write offs from previous jobs and what not..if you dont know what you are talking about or doing do professional... FH has an accountant that does it for 40 dollars. I was going to do his but with school and my taxes this year he just sent them out.
