NWR: Teachers

Is anyone else freaking out about the ELA's tomorrow??? I just can't stand that fact that if one of my third graders has a bad day they will have to repeat the grade.

will they really leave them back?

that is so ridiculous!!! im sorry but if a kid is doing well in all areas in class but not on a test. he gets left back..

it pisses me off that politicians with no teaching experience makes these rules

Yup! We can thank our mayor for that. On the other hand, I am also mad at the fact that they can go on if they do poorly all year and they pass the test. I have 2 kids I wanted to hold back last year, they passed, so they went to 4th grade, now they are way behind this year too.

Re: NWR: Teachers

i told FH already i will NEVER EVER send my kid for State testing test prep... its BS and unnecessary. All it does is stress the kids out.

ETA my poor little cousin is in 3rd grade and my cousin sent him to the after schol test prep classes.. i feel so bad for him - but he is a NY city student

Not looking forward to it at all. I'm a special ed teacher, so ofcourse my kids are going to be tested on material that is not even close to their level. Poor kids.

my little girl is taking her first state exam tomorrow.. she's actually excited. lol mostly because her teacher said she should have a good breakfast.. so she planned her breakfast and is all ready to sharpen her pencils.

i think the tests over all are really stupid.. she does really well on tests though. her practice tests have all come out as high 4.. perfect scores so i'm not worried. but i think the stress they put on teachers and students is insane..

awww so cute!! well gl to her!! but im sure she doesnt need it

I just dont understand how they can possibly justify leaving a child behind based on ONE test score???? really who were the idiots that say YES THIS SOUNDS LIKE AN EXCELLENT IDEA?

Re: NWR: Teachers

the test counts; sure
but there is also an appeals process that the parents can utilize if they and the school agree that the students performance during the year justifies promotion

well thats good to know.. honestly being in first grade i dont know about any of this... so its good to hear that there is some sort appeal process.. as long as they make sure they parents are well aware of this!

I have a SA 2-3-4th grade class.. so some of my students are testing tomorrow.. some aren't. I am proctoring the 4th graders at my site.

My kids don't get left back if they fail the test though.. there is a 3 part checklist. Attendance, classroom progress (meeting the criteria for their everyday learning) and the standardized test are the 3 parts. They must meet 2/3 of these to move on.

All that being said.. I hate these tests.. good luck to everyone tomorrow

Last year I had 6 of my students repeat because of it..It is disgusting...as is.. NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND!

Not to mention if a child has been in the country now for only one year they are mandated to take the test!

NO CHIld LEFT BEHIND does NOT mean that no child gets left back

it means that no child should miss out on whatever it is they need to progress; every child needs individualized attention and instruction to meet THEIR needs
This is a slogan that has been very misinterpreted

I am sooooooooo freaking out....

I have worked so so hard w/my 5th graders! I feel like they are going to do great (the majority). There are still some kids that are just not good at taking tests.

The morning of state tests I like to do a little cute thing...I write something on the board and give them a treat....for example

SMARTIES for all my smarties (give them smarties)
COOKIES for my super smart cookies (give them cookies)
I hope the answers POP into your heads (give them popcorn)

BTW....
Although the test prep is monotonous.....it really does show results.

I taught afterschool AIS this year and the results were AMAZING!!!
