NWR: Teachers

Would you mind telling me where you went to college, what you teach and if you liked it?! Im trying to explore my options for the next two years. Are there any colleges out there that schools do NOT hire from? TIA!!!!

I've been teaching for 17 years and i think it all depends what you plan on teaching.

Whatever you do-- do not go for elementary education, it will be next to impossible to find a job. Girls have been subbing and taking TA positions just trying to get into to a district and NYC has had cutbacks as well so it is hard there too.

I know I personally will not hire teachers who came from Dowling college. I don't even take student teachers from there anymore because they just do not prepare them well.

I only take teachers from Hofstra but again, it depends what you want to get certified in. Queens College has some good programs for certain certificaitons, etc.

I happen to get certified through Oneonta. My masters at Adelphi but that was a joke. I already had my position so I was just going thought the motions.

FM me if you have more questions, but if you can tell me what you want to get certified in I can help more. I work with teachers all over long island, and some supervising teachers at Hofstra.

I went to Stony Brook for my bachelor's in English/Secondary Education. I am having trouble finding a permanent teaching job. However, I have a leave replacement position right now which started in March. I graduated in December, and my cooperating teacher happened to be pregnant. I was offered the position as her leave replacement. I was just told recently that she is not returning until January. I can tell you that it is a lot of work, but I love teaching! The program at Stony Brook is very good. There are things I did not like about the school, but there are some very good professors in that program.

Manhattanville (In Westchester) for my BA is Secondary Social Studies Education.

Molloy for my MA in Secondary Special Education.

Both are great schools, and both were completely different experiences. I thought at Manhattanville I got a more 'hands on' experience. The professors were overall better.

Molloy's graduate program is very well known. Just going there for education helps you get a job, apparently. However, I dont think I recieved the best education I could have. The offices and professors and your advisor all tell you different things. It's not very well run. And the classes are somewhat dull.

I love what I do though. I'm really glad I went for education! Good luck!

i had an asst superintendent tell me once that he throws dowling resumes in the garbage. i don't really know much about their program, but he didn't think it was rigorous enough. dowling grads, please don't attack i'm just the messenger.

i went to oneonta state and hofstra for undergrad and grad respectively. i teach secondary english, and i thought both schools had a lot to offer. i had no trouble getting hired with an ed degree from hofstra. i've also heard good things about the teaching programs at CW Post and Adelphi.
