NWR: Teachers

NWR: Teachers

I just started subbing in William Floyd School District about a montha go. I sub for grades K-8(too scared to go to the HS). I feel like I spend half the day yelling at kids to either be quite or sit down or to stop fighting with one another. I try to use the behavioral plan in the classrooms but this doesnt always work and ometimes there isnt one(usually in the middle schools).
My question is do you have any good classroom management tips for me? Anything would be helpful! TIA!!

I currently teach CTT Kindergarten, but prior to that i subbed for two years in K-5. I can't help with JH level, but as far as Elementary one key thing I always had to do was learn their names within the first period. Without their names, it's easy for them to get away with things if you're just referring to 'hey you in the red'. I used to get to the classroom early and draw the room arrangement and write down the kids' names from their notebooks and desks. It really helped. I have some other suggestions, but they would work better if you're a regular in a particular classroom.

Honestly, and this is not going to make you happy but TIME. The longer you do it, the easier it is. I've been teaching for four years now and kids just know I mean business. You'll get there eventually. In the meantime, don't punish bad behavior, praise good behavior. Create a list of kids that were behaved on the chalkboard/whiteboard/smartboard and kids will fall all over themselves to be on the list just for bragging rights.

Oh, and edited to add I teach 7th and 8th grade... you'd think this would only work with the young kids but older ones go nuts over it. Tell them you'll send the list to their teacher for 'extra credit.'

When I am subbing for the HS we have here I walk in and stare at each one of them like Im going to murder them

The second someone talks I clap my hands and say 'Stand up and share with the class'. If they said something stupid I sent them to the office. I didn't let anything go. Im 5'1 and tiny so these kids would see me as a joke, someone to make fun of...

After me subbing up there twice they actually respect me and now I can be my bubbly self. They told me when they first had me they thought I was a natzi teacher

I'm hysterical laughing picturing a sub trying to do that at my school. 'I clap my hands and say 'Stand up and share with the class'. My kids response: 'F*** You miss, who you think you be?' and even worse...'If they said something stupid I sent them to the office. ' ~ my principals response: 'You have classroom management problems.' ~ and that would basically mean...we will no longer hire you...unless we are super desperate.

i dont want to get flamed for this but im an elementary teacher and have experience with the younger kids and know how to handle them....i could never teach at a hs because i would have no idea how to manage them

Im assuming that the the OP isnt actually scared of the kids there, just wouldnt know how to handle HS kids...they are completely differerent then the younger ones and u have to know how to handle them

I doubt it has anything to do with the district, but instead the age of all hs kids

Subbing is hard work esp. in public schools. I have to say it's easier to scare the students in private school. With public schools, I agree with Angela, if you're there a long time, they get used to seeing your face and eventually come around. You can always leave a note for their teacher letting him/her know how misbehaved they were and then it's up to the teacher to address them about it.

Good Luck

LMAO!!! I did the same thing as I was reading that. My kids are in 2nd grade and even they would look at me like *** are you doing? Clapping your hands and sending them to the office would not affect them.
When I was a sub, I would spend the first period of the day going over MY rules. The students knew what was expected of them. I would tell them that those students who followed my rules would have 15 minutes of free time (math game/reading time)at the end of the school day. Those who did not follow the rules would have to do work.
At the middle school and HS level, it's tough. I was only 22 at the time, so the kids considered me a sister. I knew that they wouldn't respect me b/c I was so young, so I basically told them that if they did the 'sub work', they could talk to their friends when they were done...but if they didn't hand in their work by the end of the period, they would get a 0. Some just dont care, but MOST of the kids did the work. There were a few that fooled around, but there will always be a few wise @sses in the group.

not a teacher but hey lurker go away....leave her alone....she may not be afraid of the actual school district....just high school aged children can be very hard to handle...they are full blown teenagers with attitudes...so please take your fake name...and leave this poor girl alone...this is just a blog....not a political crusade

I teach high school special ed. so I have alot of kids with behavioral problems. I would definatly write a letter to the teacher and include the names of the kids and a description of what they did. If you're able to as a sub...write the kids up. And be consistant- especially if you're in the same classroom more than once- the kids will remember you! Good luck.

I dont think she ever said she was afraid. Try being a teacher, no less a substitute teacher, and see how well you do for a day.

Honestly I think both of you are being rude in laughing... it worked for her - why bash it.

Re: NWR: Teachers

Unfortunately....I think subs have it so rough especially for middle school aged... I tried every thing when I use to sub and nothing worked...they just think it is a free day...it helps if the teacher leaves plans for you...if not it is insane!
But don't be discouraged...when you have your own class it is a whole new ball game and all those behavioral strategies work!

Ok...I am pretty positive she didn't mean she is scared of the kids in the district...like the demographics...
perhaps she is right out of college and only a few years older than HS students and is scared that she won't be able to manage them or play the role of authority figure to them no matter if it was the district she referred to or some rich district....stop trying to pick a fight and make everything about race when it just has no bearing in this situation.

Teaching kids that are 4 years younger than you is tough no matter how you look at it

NOt bashing it. Just laughing 'picturing' that being done at my school. Unfortunately in MY school that would never fly. The kids aren't threatened by authority.
