NWR: Teachers

Original post by GT143EA

I just started subbing in William Floyd School District about a montha go. I sub for grades K-8(too scared to go to the HS). I feel like I spend half the day yelling at kids to either be quite or sit down or to stop fighting with one another. I try to use the behavioral plan in the classrooms but this doesnt always work and ometimes there isnt one(usually in the middle schools).
My question is do you have any good classroom management tips for me? Anything would be helpful! TIA!!

Re: NWR: Teachers

've only taught elementary school, but I would be afraid of some ms students. I find with elementary non verbal cues work the best. I use a chime, clap rhythms, use the peace sign. Also, I never raise my voice b/c the louder I get, the louder they get. I find that before I began an activity I model model model, ask them what they see and hear me doing. Look into the responsive classroom series, I think it's great.
Also, being a sub is very hard work, and it does take time for you to feel comfortable,
Good Luck!!

I wish I had some good advice for you, but I don't. Like other girls mentioned...time. It takes years to become a great teacher. I had an awesome year last year, but this year is horrible and its only Thanksgiving.

Just make the most of what you have. Subbing is hard and a creature of its own. Try to make phone calls, and maybe try to have some type of reward system if you are with a class often.

Re: NWR: Teachers

i'm a middle school teacher and i can tell you that kids are very disrespectful of substitutes

in fact, the teacher next to me has sadly been out for a while due to chemotherapy and the sub they have in there is so bad and it gets me angry that she doesn't ask for help so i would ask another teacher at that grade level for help

most and i emphasize most teachers will be willing to help, i know that certain schools can seem very 'cliquish' but i know i wouldn't mind helping

i am a LIW bride who just had to use a fake name to post this.I have a child in the so called HS your so afraid of how rude are you????????? too scared of the HS,***?? what kind of teacher are you ??

Excuse me??!! What I MEANT by scared is the fact that I am not certified to teach hs and would not feel comfortable trying to teach HS Math, Science, or History at the High School level! So you shouldn't be going on here attacking me and assuming that I'm afraid of the actual high school itself! Instead of freaking out maybe you should have asked what I meant!!!

First off, you are not being rude...even if you said you were scared (which you didnt) that would be okay. Not everyone feels comfortable teaching at different levels and different subjects....we all have our strengths in certain subjects and choose to teach in those areas. The person 'rukiddingme' just went through the trouble to hide behind another name to say that you were rude and question you as a teacher. I should say ARE YOU KIDDING ME to YOU!!!! Seriously, grow up and stop attacking other people!!! Teaching is a difficult career and you need to do what you love. I love teaching the lower grades and would not teach high school... not because I'm scared, but because my passion is to teach the younger ones and I love what I do. That doesnt make me a bad teacher or rude either.

Fist off...congrats on starting to sub...this will be an amazing experience for you. The good and the bad experiences will make you a wonderful teacher when you have your own classroom.

That said- I subbed right out of college (literally). I signed on to sub for two different districts. The highest grade I subbed in was 8th. I choose this because I was very young and honestly...I prob knew some of the students in HS. Also I was certified only in Prek-6th grade. So I agree with you here about being comfortable teaching in your own certification.

One school district I subbed for has the school broken up as so:
Prek-3
4-5 grade
6-8 grade
9-12 grade

I was a sub for 2 years before I got my permanent position. Each grade is extremly different! Each class make-up is different! So you have to be very adaptable to behavior change.

My advice to you is to give the younger students your expectations right away! Dont wait. Let them know you mean business. Make a behavioral plan aimed towards the class:
*Start off the day by telling them that all their names are on an excellent student list. They get 3 warnings and their name comes off. Their teacher will get the list of excellent students by the end of the day.
*If the class is broken up into tables. Give each table a points system. The table with the most points wins at the end of the day. (I have used this a lot with the 4-6 grades)
*Use the teachers behavioral plan. I have one and I know most of the teachers in my building have one too.
* Write the teacher a detailed note. Giving names and the problems the students gave you. Hopefully the teacher will give the students the consequences they deserve.
* They need to earn your respect. You can be nice later.
*I have used each of these plans and most of the time they have worked. Try it! I hope it works for you too!
I am speaking from experience. Students of all ages behave differently when a sub is around. My students have done it every year. Be strong and firm.

I hope I have helped. Im sorry it is so long but some of the comments on here really made me want to share my experience with you.

I have had great classes and classes where I have had to hold in my tears until the students left. I really feel that all of these experiences have helped me.

Good Luck and FM if you want to chat more!!!
