I teach middle school and I use it to prompt a persuasive writing assignment about pollution.

I read this book with 2nd graders. After reading the book we made Lorax and Truffula Trees and on them they wrote something that they could do to make the Earth better.

i LOVE this book!! I teach 6th grade LA/SS and i like to use it in the begining of the year when studying renewable and non-renewable resources. The kids love it and i usually have them write a poem with this prompt: 'Pretend you are the Lorax and you are coming to our school to speak with the students about conserving our natural resources. Create a poem that you would use to inform the students about why we need natural resources, what happens if we dont conserve our natural resources and what they can do to help.'Their poems usually come out great! sometimes i offer another prompt where they have to speak from the perspective of a truffula tree. I also know that a science teacher on my grade level uses it for the unit on air pollution. I think it would also be good this time of year since earth day just passed. Good luck! HTH!

its a great book for all ages, I read in to my class (first, second grade) You could have them write a letter as the Lorax asking the factory owner to stop using the truffula trees! You could also discuss the figurative language in the story, Dr Seuss has a great way of using made up words that still convey meaning, like the 'grickle' grass.hth i love that story!
