NWR: Teachers: Good Citizen lesson plan help

NWR: Teachers: Good Citizen lesson plan help

I am teaching my kindergarten and first grade class about the characteristics of a good citizen (at home, school and the community).

Kindergarten?

First grade
I was thinking of making something like a citizen tree where the they would write on the leaves how they can be a good citizen in the areas listed above, BUT I can't use a tree.

Another teacher already has a tree in the hallway with another idea.

Any thoughts?

The hardest part is teaching the same concept to two different grades and coming up with different activities for both.

Plus, I need to include poetry somewhere

Thanks

How about keeping with the tree idea do a flag... and put their ideas on the stars?

what about a house or something (they could put their ideas on bricks or parts of the house depending on class size). i dunno if they'd get it, but it's kinda like being a good citizen is like being part of a big family (hence the home), you know, a 'good foundation' sorta thing.... heh

hth!

What if they write one of those poems with the first letter of the word citizen starting each line:

C
I
T
I
Z
E
N

or you can make a template for them
with a word bank. (like an ad libs.)

A good citizen is __________(adj.)
A good citizen will always ________ (verb).

I teach high school English, so I may be way off...

Ooh, I like the spring idea. You could also make a flower - have the kids write on each petal

I am a Pre- K teacher but you may be able to Modify this for the Kindergarten level...

We do a theme on Creating Character. You can start the lesson by reading a book about different Community Helpers ( I am stumped for the title at the moment) and then ask each child to close their eyes and think about what they want to be when they get older and what that person does. Afterwards you can have them write their ideas down and illustrate them.

Laminate all of their answers and bind them into a book!

Oh and if you need it in poetry form .. you might be able to put it into Haiku or something.

Just an idea :)

we this this with my patients, made the wall an underwater mural and had them paint on fish during art therapy and they really enjoyed it.
