Just need some advice. I am certified to teach 1-6 but have been unable to find a teaching job the last two years. I will be attending one more teacher recruiting fair before I give up. But the question is: if for some reason I do find a job what do I do about my honeymoon. The honeymoon is being planned for after the wedding in April. I don't know what to do about bboking it. If I have a teaching job then I would have to put it off until June. But if not then I want it after the wedding.
I do not want to put my honeymoon plans on hold anymore. What do you think I should do?

Re: NWR: Teachers I have a ? for you
My FH is a teacher in the very same position.
He's certified 1-6, and is almost done with his masters in Special Ed. He was employed full time for about 2 years, but the district laid him off.
He's been at another district since October (in a leave replacement position and she's coming back in about 3 weeks), but doesn't know if he'll be hired for September.
I was in your spot a few months ago. After months of deliberation, I said eff it and just booked the HM for the week after the wedding. We're not getting the 2 week HM we wanted, but 1 week is better than nothing.
We're leaving for the airport 12 hours after the reception is over (Sat afternoon), and returning the following Sunday night at 10pm.
There's only so long you can hang up in the air with no decision - I say JUST BOOK IT WHEN YOU WANT IT!

Most districts will have the same week off in April in 2008... i would look it up somewhere (perhaps teachers on here can find out for you) I can check my distric calendar... and you can book your honeymoon then.... worse case scenario you take a few personal days... you'll already be working there for almsot 8 months by the time your HM rolls around.

My district's 2008 Calendar says:
March 20, 21, 24 (Spring Recess1 - Easter) March 25 Schools Reopen Thursday-Monday
April 21-25 (Spring Recess 2)
April 28, 29 *Contingency Days (only open if 2-3 snow days were used)

Re: NWR: Teachers I have a ? for you
It really depends on how important a teaching job is to you. Most districts on Long Island hire and lay off every year. As a first year teacher, if you take a week off, its pretty much like writing your name at the top of the lay-off lists. Days off is one of the first things they look at when evaluating for lay-offs.

I am a teacher in Queens. I have been teaching junior high for the past 5 years. My principal told me that for my honeymoon, I am allowed to use 3 personal days. Anything over that I have to take days without pay. I am taking my honeymoon the week following my wedding ( I get married Saturday, leave on Monday for honeymoon).

Re: NWR: Teachers I have a ? for you
Your best bet is to go during spring break. My district does not allow us to take days before or after a vacation. also the first year you do not want to take to many personal or sick days this does not reflect well on you.
Don't give up on finding a job its very compeitive but you need experience before anyone can hire you. And you need something that is going to help you stand out..
Have you thought about summer school, private schools, special education schools? Have you mass mailed your resume ? Do you have subscription to the NY Times for job offers in there? Subbing?

I am in the same situation!! I just got certified and will hopefully start a new job in September and I def. wont have tenure by the time my wedding comes.
So we are just going to go on our HM a week or 2 after our wedding, during Spring Break. I am NOT happy about it. But it was either do it that way, or spend alot more money that we dont have and get married in the summer!! Ugh, I get so mad thinking about it!!!

Re: NWR: Teachers I have a ? for you
I am in a kinda of similiar situation -- I will be finishing my masters this August for Speech-Pathology and we are leaving for our honeymoon the Monday after the wedding and won't return till Oct. 1st. so if I were to get a job in a school I don't know what I'd do.....we just really wanted a September wedding and we went for it. But my field has some flexibility where I could get an agency job. But I am screwed if I get a school job.
say you don't get a September teaching job -- but I hope you do!! what about just subbing exclusively for one district then your not obligated if you want to take the days off you can and you would still be gaining good teaching experience. hope that helped

Re: NWR: Teachers I have a ? for you
most li districts will not let you take personal days for a HM. don't risk it, especially not in your first year!!
i would just book the end of june or july. but be careful...my district has meetings that are MANDATORY for the last week of june and the last week of august. many others do as well for the first 2 years of you teaching there. i would be safe and just do july

Re: NWR: Teachers I have a ? for you
Have you tried NYC? I was searching forEVER putting off going to the city (mainly for commuting reasons) and finalyl gave in ahha. Its not bad at all. I worked 1 year as a sub then 3 years as a TA. TA was great. Look into a TA position in the meantime . I worked in Island Park and it was GREAT. they offer full benefits, perks and after school clubs and programs. The pay was really good too. I worked in RVC for a year before IP and the pay was horrible with no benefits. (FM me if you want some info)
Anyway, if you are really dedicated to becoming a teacher i would put off your honeymoon till the summer unless you can gaurentee that you will be away during the easter break or something.

Re: NWR: Teachers I have a ? for you
If you are going to be in a probationary position, you will probably NOT be granted time off for a honeymoon. I know of a tenured teacher with 10 years experience in one district who was given a hard time about taking off 3 days for a honeymoon. Districts have their choice of literally thousands of candiates for teaching jobs, so you don't want to give your new employer ANY reason to not renew your contract for a second year. Calling in 'sick' after your wedding is guaranteed to backfire since your principal is bound to get wind of your wedding date. I know several teachers who have gotten married during the school year who took their honeymoons weeks or months later when school was off. I even know of one teacher who worked the day OF her wedding (she got married on a Friday night)!!! I know it stinks that we teachers do not have flexibility of when to take time off, but let's face it, we are off for 12 weeks a year, so it is a tradeoff.

Re: NWR: Teachers I have a ? for you
Have you had experience teaching? If not, it's really had to find a teaching position right out of school without experience in the suburbs (unless you know someone). Try applying to the NYC BOE....a friend of mine teaches in Queens and it's not like typical NYC schools. Plus, NYC teachers can do anything...they're much more flexible about personal days from what I heard from friends that work there. My supt. on the other hand wouldn't even let me take A DAY off for the wedding...it would be unpaid! That's why I'm getting married over Christmas Break and unfortunately not going on our honeymoon until the summer (we want to go away for more than a week). *****...but that's the price to pay for a in job in the suburbs. Maybe consider a teaching assistant position. After I finished grad school I was offered a .6 teacher .4 ta position in Westchester. I took it because it meant a foot in the door. The following year I was bumped to a full time teacher.
Best of luck...I'm sure you'll get plenty of responses if anyone here's of an opening.

We had the same problem and decided that we would take our honeymoon one month later. We got married in Jan and did our honeymoon over Feb vacation.

Re: NWR: Teachers I have a ? for you
wow... i am readign these posts and i realize how LUCKY i am to be where i am... it's only my second year here so i have 1 mroe year til I'm tenured, but my prinicipal gladly gave me 2 personal days before my wedding so it wouldn't come out of my sick bank and let me leave early the tuesday and wednesday the week of my wedding.
I think if you can plan it near a break (I did) great. I think if you work hard and do your job all year long, i dont' think most reasonable principals would give you a hard time about taking a day or two. also, look in your contract....weddings shoudl be in there as at least 1 personal day.

If anyone ever hears about elementary openings in NYC, please FM me.
