Just wondering if anyone completed a masters degree while they were full time teaching. If so, were you required to student teach? If so, did they let you use your own teaching hours towards your required hours??
I'm trying to finish my masters through Touro. I currently teach 8th grade and the degree is in Middle School Ed and Special Ed. They are asking me to do 200 hours of student teaching and are not allowing me to use any of my own class time because I don't currently teach special ed. Additionally, my middle school doesn't house 6th grade. So for half the hours, I'd have to travel to the elementary school and that means less time to actually spend at the school
Assuming that I could dedicate my 3 prep periods to student teaching (which is insanity and impossible), that would take 67 days. 5 days in a week... 14 weeks. Straight. Teaching with no breaks, my classes and someone elses.
Any suggestions???

i did complete my masters while teaching, but it was through the teaching fellows, so i was not responsible for student teaching as well. what are your other options?

I've never heard of having to student teach when you're already a certified teacher. I know when I was getting dual certified I only had to take the subject classes I need and the exams...

Re: NWR: Teachers? I need help!!!
I want to cry.
I am in my 5th year of teaching which means my provisional license will expire in Septamber. The only 2 courses I have left are Observation Hours and Student Teaching. NO ONE EVER FRIGGIN TOLD ME that you can't take them at the same time. So here I am, spring before I lose my license and they're telling me I will have to wait to do student teaching in the summer.
Here's the kicker. My wedding is June 30. My honeymoon is then until July 18th. That leaves me about 4 weeks to complete about 200 hours of student teaching in a placement that i have to find on my own.... and then get all of my paperwork up to Albany before September. it's going to be impossible and I want to cry.
I have 3 options basically. 1) Beg and cry until Touro changes their mind and bends a rule (not going to happen) 2) Apply for an extention on my license but I'd have to claim extenuating circumstance and make it sound like it was all Touro's fault (gonna be tough) or 3) give up on the permanent license and apply for an Initial one, which means I won't be grandfathered under the better rules and reg's about certification (torture).

Apply for the extension. It can't hurt, and they're not as bad about it as you may think.
I feel for ya though, the certification system *****.

You should not have to do additional observation hours . . . i would call up Nassau Boces and speak to the woman in charge of certification. She is on top of her stuff. For the life of me, I can not remember her name, but she could shed some light on the subject.

I went to Touro also, THEY ARE A NIGHTMARE! A year later I find out thye never sent in my permanent certification. But yes they did make me student teach. I 'did' it in my building with a collegue. I was able to use some of my classroom teaching time towards it though.

I completed my masters at Touro while teaching--but I teach Special Ed--so I WAS allowed to use my own class for most of it-- I still had to observe a general ed class....... I know this is not PC or morally correct --but do yo know a teacher that wouls say you did more hours than you actually did?

I do, and I was planning to do that already, honestly... but if I pretend to be doing 5 hours in a day, aren't they going to realize that it's impossible? There aren't enough hours in the day! (You would think they would understand that it's impossible and not make already busy people do this!!!)
