NWR: Teachers, I need you

Hey girls,

Well unfortunately we are faced w/ the unpleasant knowledge that we are going back to school

Anyhow, I have been teaching for 7 yrs and Im tired of my same old 'opening day' routine. I was wondering if anyone had any fun and cute get-to-know-you activities.

Just some background, I teach 6th grade SS and I teach 40 min periods so it cant be anything long.

THANKS

Hey Michele! I was actually thinking about this the other day...
Here's something I do with my 4th graders and they get a kick out of it. I give them each an index card and tell them to write 4 things about themselves. 3 of them have to be true, but one has to be made up. Then they read their index card and the class has to guess which is not true. I do it to. As one of my true things I put that I've gone skydiving and they always guess that that's the fake one and they are amazed to find out it's true.
just a little get to know you thing...

I did this last year and I actually saw another teacher improve on the idea...'ME Bags' or the other teacher did 'Me in a bag'

I had them gather artifacts about themselves and put them in a brown paper bag and decorate the outside of the bag...the other teacher did clear ziplock baggies and put them on a bulletin board which I think was a better idea.

I then had the students come up and talk about themselves and describe the artifacts. I demonstrated by making one myself..this helped them to get to know me

I am in a completely different boat. I have to establish class rules ON DAY ONE. I make a class contract. I am so not looking forward to this. What rude awakening it is to go back.

I do an all about me box as well. Similar to the me bag. I start my presenting my own all about me box with things that are important to me and then they do the same and present it to the class.....

i also do a classmate bingo....i have a sheet made up with different things written on it...for example...

_______ has a dog
_______'s favorite color is pink
_______'s favorite subject is math
etc. etc. etc....

so it's set up like a bingo board and they have to go around the room to find people who fit the criteria. this is a cute little get to know you thing that gets them up and moving around. i think last year i had little prizes for the first 3 people that finished their bingo board..........

Well its not a getting to know you activity but I still think its a great idea, I have kids take out a sheet of paper and ask them questions like Who is your best friend? What was your favorite memory from the summer? What do you think will be your favorite class this year? YOur worse? I usually ask them about twenty questions. Then can even be predictions like who will win the World Series. I tell them that I will not read their answers so to be as specific and to discuss whatever they want. I give them envelopes in which they put their names on the front and they seal them. I tell them that they will get them back at the end of the year. The more they put in it the better for them later. They love it. They really see how things and they change. And I hope it gives them a little perceptive. And it sets you up for the last day.
