NWR: Teachers.... I need your help, please!

Hi teachers!

I am going on a school counseling interview Monday and one of the requirements is to conduct a mini lesson on a guidance related topic. Problem is,,, I have no teaching experience. Could any of you girls please give me tips or advice about conducting a lesson. I really don't even know where to start.

Thank you soooooooooooooo much!

Hmmm, How about a role playing lesson on bullyism? Character ed seems to be growing these days. in my school... the guidance counselors actually teach character ed in the classrooms. let us know how it turns out! Good luck!

Bullying is a great topic. ANything on character education will be great. Just make sure you keep them engaged. Maybe do some role playing skits with them.

The session has to be like 20 minutes.

Here is the situation, it is a charter school just opening in Sept. there will be six teahers and each will have a group of students to be advisors to. So, I dont know whether I should do a topic like bullying or rather focus on skills that the teachers would need to be an effective counselor, such as empathetic listening skills.

Thanks girls. Im so nervous I dont know what to do with myself.

Is the presentation for the kids or adults?

It is going to be just to the teachers. So the presentation will be a sample of a lesson conducted to the teachers, how to better advise students or be a better advisor.

FM me your email and I can send you some psychoeducational guidance lessons if you want..I am a counselor and had to do a lot of school based mental health guidance lessons following 9-11.

ETA: If they are asking for a guidance related topic I would think they would want it to be geared towards the children--many schools have a guidance requirement that counselors have to go in every so often (once a month) to do a lesson.

i understand how you feel. i suggest that you write everything out for yourself, since it is your first lesson. i recall doing my first lesson in front of the class and i didnt write everything out for myself, but rather a summary. i wish i was more through so i wasnt so nervous.

hope that makes sense.

role plays sound like a good idea!

If you took a group counseling class and had to write plans for a group - that may be a good starting point too. Those protocols are similar to a lesson...

How about do a read aloud on bullying, fairness, and then make a discussion group about it

I am a guidance counselor in Boston and I teach a developmental guidance class to the 6th graders. FM me if you need some more info, ideas for activities or subjects to touch base on.

Here's a standard lesson format that I use all the time:

Grade Level:

Subject

Lesson Time: How long is the class

Lesson Goals: (what do you want to accomplish during the lesson.

National or State Standards: (check out the NYS website to get that for
you subject area.)

Lesson Outcomes: Explain what students will will
accomplish during the lesson. Ex: Students will be able
to identify vocabulary words in a story, students will be
able to answer questions about the story, etc.

Materials (black board, markers, paper, etc)

Procedure: explain exactly what students will be doing step by step in
each lesson. This may be very long.

Evaluation: how will you know they were successful

Closure: How will you end the lesson so you can start again the next day.

Homework: Either something to write, read, or think about for the next
day.

Ok i hope this helps as a guideline, you should also look online for lesson ideas.
