NWR: Teachers, National Poetry Month and Social Studies?

Any ideas on how to integrate the two for K-2?

I teach social Studies and my school wants us to do an activity that involves our subject area. How do you do poetry with K-2?

I can read it , but they can't write it.

Any suggestions?
Thanks

You can read them poetry that has to do with the subject area and have them draw pics that go with the imagery of the poem

Can I find poetry books based on Social Studies?

I think April is about being a good citizen.

Thanks

in second grade they can definitely write their own poetry....i know the class i am in is obsessed with acrostic poems...so lets say you read them a book and then you can then take the ideals from that history story, and they can write an acrostic poem. an easy example is martin luther king...read a story about him...he wants equality or even fairness for all...they could write a poem as so using fairness

F (a sentence, word, phrase starting with f)
A
I
R
N
E
S
S

and yiou just go down and do it for each letter

hope this helps

Probably not what you wre thinking of-- but this popped into my mind--- & i don't know what grade this book was intended but I know Dr. SUess has a few books that can be used with Social Studies--
this is something i quoted from an internet site:

'Another book, The Sneetches and Other Stories (1961), contains four tales. Each one is a plea for racial tolerance, continuing a theme Seuss explored during the war with cartoons urging full use of 'colored labor' and railing against anti-Semitism. The stories are also amusing, with their meaning embedded inside a delightfully breezy anapestic tetrameter verse (two unstressed syllables followed by a stressed one, with four beats to the line) that Seuss employed to such wonderful effect throughout his career.'

i remember doing basic haiku's in 3rd great - tough for the real little ones but the second graders might be ok.

or you can sorta do basic principles of poetry. like a bunch of rhyming words or something.
