NWR:: Teachers? Need an idea :)

NWR:: Teachers? Need an idea :)

How would you introduce a unit based on a community study for upper elem. grades?

Everything I plan seems to be more for a first or 2nd grade class.

Please offer some suggestions.

I need some more details and an objective so I can think

i need to know the ultimate outcome
i am an asst. principal and when i work on units of study with my teachers, i tell them to think of your goal and work backwards

I am doing an interdisciplinary unit on 'Deer Park.'

I constructed a unit web with ideas in social studies, language arts, math, science, technology, sociology and performing arts.

What I hope to accomplish with this unit- I want students to understand and appreciate the different things that form a strong community.

We'll look at the people in the community, businesses, the history of deer park, the population, advertisement, etc.

This is about as far as I have come so far.

you can start off by having them list things their community does- events, concerts, etc. you could ask things they know happen in their community and things they enjoy doing...maybe start on a smaller scale talking about the school community, then bring it to the larger scale

Start with school community
Relate it to Deer Park community
Have students write letters to elected officials, local stores and buisnesses.
Go online and find info on the school district and what it contributes.

Starting with the school emphasizes the small components that make up the communtiy

Still thinking...

hm... you could always do a sort of community outreach project, that way they learn by doing. you know, maybe something that has access points to different parts of the community, like if they're going to have, i dunno, a benefit block party (pulling things out of the air), they have to contact the cops to get permission, visit people in the neighborhood for approval and for inviting, get in contact w/ community higher ups to let them know what's going on, you know, stuff like that. then on top of that they could research a local community charity to give the proceeds to and maybe visit (if it's a children's hospital or something like that).

i dunno, hth!

That is a great idea!

You can start off by having them do a KWL chart...
What they know about their community-
What they want to know abouty their community-
What they learned about their community-

That way it you see a clear outcome and the students feel like they reached a goal they set for themselves.

-Maybe you could bring in some people from the community to talk to the class- police officer, post office, store owners, etc...

I am not sure what grade it is for...I teach middle school, so I would probably have them do a research project..

I want to begin with a KWL chart. I am just not sure of where to go with it. It is for a 3rd-4th grade class. This is an introductory lesson plan for an interdisciplinary unit on the community.
