I have seen a post similar in the past and am asking for the same kind of help.
I am trying to get a job as a school counselor. I have heard that generic letters and pretty useless. I have no idea what to write and how much should I dedicate to district specific information.
If anyone can help i would REALLY REALLY appreciate it.
Thank you.

Re: NWR: Teachers/Educators... I Need Your Help!!
I would definitely change each cover letter to reflect the school's name and address and address the person who it is supposed to go to by name. I would also include something specific about the school so it looks like you researched it and put some time into it. I would visit their web sites and read about the specific schools so you can write something about them personally. www.longisland.com has a list all the schools on long island with a link to thier web site. Good Luck!!!

Thanks for the response. I just dont know how much information about the district to include. I certainly do tailor each letter as far as name of school, address and contact person.

i'm a teacher.
from what i hear from my friends who are school secretaries, most don't even look at cover letters and throw them out. put more attention into the resume than the cover letter.

Hi-just wanted to respond..I am a mental health therapist and I have done a lot of school based work...I know school counselor jobs can be really tough to come by (at least where we live in VA...) A lot of people got hired more through school career fairs too. Another resource I used often was the following recruitment site for private schools if you are interested: Carney Sandoe
GOOD LUCK

In my school, they read the cover letter to see if the person put time and effort into getting to know about our sepcific school. Programs that make our school unique or what our reading program is etc....

I heard that also when applying for teaching jobs in district. I went to eh websites and found out one outstanding thing about each district, or even their mission statement and put a sentence or two in each letter some how mentioning that. The rest of the letter stayed the same (except name and address of course)...I just cut and pasted.

I think it is a great idea to include something about each specific school in the cover letter that will make the school really notice you. I unfortunately don't have an example cover letter but I can give you an example. Our school is really into balanced literacy and that information is stated on our school website. If a potential teacher included something about balanced literacy on their cover letter I bet they would get an interview. HTH and good luck, it's not an easy task looking for counseling or teaching jobs.
