so i went to my gyno today to switch to yaz and she suggested i get the HPV vaccine. she said as long as i start the getting the vaccines (theres 3) while i'm 26 i'm eligible to get it. she gave me some paperwork on it and stuff, but i'm just not sure. i talked to my dad about it and he said i should get it. Even if nothing ever happens between FH and I, hes like theres always a chance (god forbid) that i could get rapped. has anyone gotten it? or thinking about getting it?

i totally wanted to get it, but I'm too old! i would tell your Dr. any concerns so she can address them. As far as I understand it can only protect you, do it now before you age out of it like me.

I'm thinking of getting it. I've heard it's expensive but if my gyn says it's covered b my insurance I may get it.

Isn't the HPV the virus they keep airing on TV that is a cause of cervical cancer? So couldn't you, God forbid, still get it despite any sexual contact?

I didn't know they had a vaccine. I would get it. Not that this is going to happen or anything, but one of my friends got cancer from HPV. She got HPV from her husband who slept with someone else just one time. She had to have a histerectomy and a hernia surgery last year because the incision opened. So you never know and you're better off safe than sorry.

HPV is not covered by most insurances yet. My gyno said wait until it is... but he strongly suggested I get it as a precaution!

Re: NWR: the HPV vaccine
ITs a series of 3 shots - you get the 1st, hen the 2nd is 2 months laser and the 3rd is 6 months after that. It's prob not covered by insurance and the cost for all three is about $350-400.

If it's covered by insurance, you should get it. You never know. I don't know you at all, so, please, please don't take this personally: if it were me, I'd get it. Just because you're getting married it doesn't mean you'll never be exposed to HPV. I'm a bit older than most of you, and I can't tell you how many of my friends who got married in their twenties are now divorced or on their second marriages. Or who are still married but weathered affairs. It's sad but true. I think the statistics are something like half of marriages end in divorce nowadays. Get the vaccine.

Re: NWR: the HPV vaccine
I got my first two shots, next one in April. my insurance covered for it, so I jumped at it while I'm still under the age limit.

Re: NWR: the HPV vaccine
stupid question but are your Drs testing your for HPV before giving you the vaccine since like 1 in 3 people have it but never exhibit signs of it? It can lay dormant for years before you ever exhibit signs, some people never have symptoms, making it hard to figure out who you got it from even if you've been in a serious relationship for awhile.
here are some facts about it from the Center for Disease Control...don't let these drug companies scare the hell out of you...if you keep up with routine exams, even if you had HPV, chances are they'd catch it before it becomes full blown cancer..it becomes abnormal pre-cancerous cells before it turns into cancer. (i've had the bad paps, pre-cancerous lesions, and surgery to correct it...HPV tests...etc...in case you were wondering where my 'expertise' comes from...haha...just don't want anyone freaking out like i did years ago)
.if you keep up with routine exams, even if you had HPV, chances are they'd catch it before it becomes full blown cancer..i
But it's much, much better to never have it in the first place! Which is why they should give it to all kids--not just girls--who are 12 or 13. Let's face it, most women in their twenties have had lots of chances to be exposed.
It's true that cervical cancer has been on the downturn, and that's a wonderful thing. But the importance of the vaccine shouldn't be diminished, because 'downturn' doesn't mean 'eradicated.' The idea that we can actually vaccinate against cancer! Amazing. We live in amazing times.

Re: NWR: the HPV vaccine
I've experienced all this as well, it's not the end of the world...but if I could go back in time and get the vaccine, I would do it in a heartbeat!! I agree, too, that you shouldn't allow the commercials to scare you into thinking that HPV=cancer, but why not protect yourself that much more if you're in the right age group, etc. If I ever have a daughter, you'd better believe she's going to be getting the vaccine ASAP!

Under 27...any woman under 27 should definitely get it...All the woman that do have it now would have loved to have this option and would've given anything for it. Better safe than sorry, why take that chance. And yes get tested first obviously...I went in december for a regular pap smear, everything was fine and i had asked about get the HPV vaccine, problem is that theres 3 shots and well i wouldve been under 27 for only one of them so it was too late for me, otherwise i would've definitely done it.

my gyno told me about it too (I am too old for it but she said she would sign off for me to get it if I wanted it as a just in case) I am undecided there are sooo many strainsof HPV... and it only works for a couple/few of them ~ so you can definately still get HPV and Cervical cancer even with the vaccine. It really has not been out to long... maybe wait another year or so while it is out on the market for alittle while.
